how to read reiserfs on 15.3? What to do with "old" backups?
I know reiserfs was removed from 15.3. Still I have many TB external disks with Reiserfs (encrypted). I can't read them right now. First question: How can I read those backups? libreiserfscore0 and reiserfs are installed, but plugging such a disk leads to a message "unknown file system". What else do I need to install? Second question: What do I do with those encrypted Reiserfs backups? Do I really have to copy all that tremendous amount of data to other disks, newly format the original one, and copy back? (I have a laptop with 15.2 where I still can read them) Is there another way? Copying all those TB would take me about a week, I guess... Thanks for any ideas. Perhaps you could boot a live older version from USB stick.

If reiserfs is just blacklisted, try "modprobe reiserfs", if the module is available that should work. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (17.1°C)

Bad news I'm afraid - see my previous posting, 2 seconds ago. I was not aware reiserfs had been completely removed. I think your only option is to find reiserfs in the build service - maybe here: https://software.opensuse.org/package/reiserfs-kmp-64kb -- Per Jessen, Zürich (17.1°C)

I thought maybe reiserfs would be in kernel-default-extra or kernel-default-optional, but I don't see it. You have to install: libreiserfscore0-3... libreiserfs-0... reiserfs-3... Telcontar:~ # rpm -qa | grep -i reiserfs reiserfs-3.6.27-2.24.x86_64 libreiserfs-0_3-0-0.3.0.5-1.30.x86_64 libreiserfscore0-3.6.27-2.24.x86_64 Telcontar:~ # That should be enough to mount in read-only mode. To have read access, create file "/etc/modprobe.d/50-reiserfs.conf", with this line: options reiserfs allow_unsupported=1 The release notes do not document this (yes, I wrote a bugzilla). It even recommends to migrate to btrfs, which can be a mistake if the old reiserfs had millions of small files. https://doc.opensuse.org/release-notes/x86_64/openSUSE/Leap/15.3/ So, doing that should give you full access to your backups, but there is no assurance that even read access won't be removed at some point in the future. Then you would have to use a virtual machine. So my recommendation would be to migrate the data, but no hurry. Probably you can use bigger hard disks than in the past. By the way, I have "discovered" that there are external boxes to implement raid, via USB-3, either hardware or software (if the box supports JBOD). https://www.startech.com/en-eu/faq/raid-modes-explanation Also, I found something about external boxes with HD included already: that they can use encryption on their own, which means that if the box breaks the hard disk inside might not be readable on another box or machine. https://www.amazon.es/WD-My-Book-Externo-sobremesa/dp/B01LWVT81X/ Read the first report, by David (in Spanish). (Amazon sells it for 159,99€, PCcomponentes for 251,64, the same exact model (P/N: WDBBGB0080HBK-EESN; The comments mention some new version) I have two for backups, but after reading that comment about encryption, I'm not buying it again. Ah, I overlooked it when I searching earlier - Daniel, you need to install "reiserfs-kmp-default", with the other three packages above, I think that ought to be enough. Like Carlos mentioned, you need an extra option if you want write access. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (15.3°C)

Yes, I've read that. Don't want to start a flame war (so I don't enter into details and no discussion about that point, please) but I don't like btrfs. So, I'll have to walk to a shop and leave some 15.3-extra-money for a large disk to copy my disks to it and from there back to the newly formated old ones. And some day maybe I can use may computer just to work with it :-) (SCNR, but those are the things that make me refrain from upgrading to newer versions: lot of work, and here even cash, just to continue with something that was working :-( - again, no flame war, please)

Ah, ok. Actually I added this and it works but I was wrong in testing (*). So problem solved for the moment. Thanks to everybody who helped! (*) The root folder on my external disk belongs to root and only the subfolders are mine (I never changed that because everything is in a subfolder and so I don't care). I tried to add something to the root folder of that disk and as it failed I thought it was because of not having write access... in the subfolders I can write. Well, it happens. I had to stop using NVidia and switch to AMD because the proprietary driver stopped supporting my "old" card. Yes, this is a large change for a minor upgrade, IMO it should not have been allowed on 15.3. It was not even documented till I found about it. But if you do not do the minor upgrades, when at the end comes the major upgrade to version 16.x, you will get the accumulation of all the small upgrades, plus the large upgrade of 16. Huh, careful with big disks. One large (4TB) disk died in my miniserver. I bought a larger disk (6T) for replacement. I formatted and encrypted it, then copied the data over, using an external USB-SATA dock station, then put the disk in the USB-SATA that the old (4TB) disk was using. Problem: that box did not recognize the partitions. Bought new box: same problem. Bought second new box: same problem. W....? Plugged the hard disk directly into SATA of another computer: same problem. Wow. All the USB-SATA boxes were in fact good, except the initial USB-SATA dock station. Need another large disk to migrate data and partition/format again the 6TB disk. Conclusion: format disks on real hardware, not USB-SATA converters. Conclusion 2: computing is expensive. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar)
