[opensuse] local parallel oprinter in openSUSE 11.4
Hello: I would like to configure my kyocera parallel printer in YaST, openSUSE 11.4. If I go to Harwdware>Printer in YaST the "Printer Configurations" window opens but it only says: "There is no print queue." If I click "Add" the "Add New Printer Configuration" window opens which says: "No connections. Try 'Detect More' or use the 'Connection Wizard'." Detect more does not find anything. Clicking 'Connection Wizard' opens 'Connection Wizard' window. Under "Directly connected device>Parallel port" nothing is listed. What can I do with this? openSUSE 11.2 could find an configure the printer perfectly right away on the very same hardware. Thanks, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Dunno, but try to ignore the autodetection and add the printer anyway. That's what I did with mine in the past, it was never detected. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Hello: In the meantime I found the reason. The lp module is not loaded at boot time therefore YaST can not detect the printer. It's discussed in opensuse forum. This is the first SUSE/openSUSE release which could not detect a parallel printer. IMHO such a change should have been mentioned in the release notes at least. Added the reference to http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Most_annoying_bugs_11.4 as any of you could have done this too. And the ID in openFATE is? Please quote it as part of this thread as reference too. If none cares we'll see the same issue with openSUSE 12.1 again. I'm quite sure I'll not get bitten by this missing feature again as the usecase why I cared vanished recently. Par port printer users please have an eye on this! If the YaST printer setup wizard checks already for a parallel printing device this feature should be very, very basic and easy to add. Should™. :) Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany

The YaST printer module does not at all check for any printers. It only shows those printer connections which were already autodetected by CUPS (i.e. what the CUPS command line tool "lpinfo -l -v" shows when you run it as root). CUPS autodetects, what can be autodetected in the current system. CUPS does not change the underlying system. In particular CUPS does not change the kernel by loading or re-loading kernel modules or change udev or whatever. Therefore this is also no issue for CUPS. Furthermore YaST is not the right place because there are several other printer setup tools which all depend on a working base system: - Gnome printer setup tool (system-config-printer) - CUPS web frontend and CUPS command line tools (lpinfo, lpadmin) - for HP devices: HP's HPLIP driver setup tool "hp-setup" - KDE printer setup tool (is there one specific for KDE?) A generic solution is needed. Or do you really prefer workarounds over a solution so that in the end YaST will become the only printer setup tool which can be used to set up printers at the parallel port? What else except insufficiency can be expected from workarounds. A base system functionality (send data to parallel port printers) does no longer work in openSUSE 11.4 out of the box because there was a change in the base system (a change in udev). Therefore the right way is to fix it in the base system. Sorry, but I am confused. As I am not familiar with these things (openFATE; I've never heard about it before), I don't know what I am supposed to do now. Could you explain it please or give a link where it is explained? https://features.opensuse.org/ is the best entry point I have in mind. At the starting point you also find instructions how to use it. After the recent comments in this thread I'm quite sure this will not be solved/ addressed in a generic _and_ simple way as suggested and requested. I'm sure we'll see a weeks if not months ongoing and to nothing leading discussion while user Joe Doe will not be able to use a par port printer with the next openSUSE release. But hey, that's all at the end an advantage to our environment. ;) Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany
