** Forwarding message from Barbara Farmer <queenofallthis@earthlink.net> on Thu, 30 Oct 2003 06:16:38 -0600 Hi, everyone. My daughter is running 8.2 and has suddenly lost her CD R/W. When she left clicks to play a CD she gets an error message: I/O error; Device not mounted, could not determine file system and none was specified. We've tried everything we can think of. She's looked at the configurations and can't see anything wrong (certainly nothing obvious to her). So we suggested deleting the CD R/W and starting over. Should be a quick and simple reinstall, right? Wrong. For example, we thought that perhaps, somehow the icon on the desktop had lost its linkage to the CD so we suggested deleting the icon and creating a new one. But she can't seem to remove the existing CD R/W icon from her desktop. When she right clicks on the icon and tries to delete there is no delete option. The only options she gets are: open copy add to bookmarks open with.... copy to public folder mount create data cd with K3b copy to edit file type... properties Nothing else is available with a right click. Left click tries to start the CD R/W which leads to I/O error, etc. In addition, she cannot drag the icon to the trash bin. It won't go there. :o) Any ideas on how to get her CD R/W running again with or without a reinstall of the CD? Your suggestions are welcome. Thx. :o) Gil

Thx. :o) Gil as far as I know, there is no problem, I get the same error with all audio CD's; if you want to play it, use a program provided, you can't open it as you do a data CD.

Thanks for reply. You raise an interesting point. From her e-mails I assumed that she was having problems with data CDs. It never occured to me that she might be trying to play music CDs by left clicking the desktop icon. I don't think that's the problem but I'm sending her an inquiry. You could be right. However, that still does not explain why she cannot delete the icon from her desktop. Any thoughts on that? Gil

Is susewatcher running? That will automatically put the icons on her desktop, but they are not really on her desktop. She would need to copy them to her desktop (initially she will have 2 each), then activate susewatcher. Once it has been started, it will no longer put the regular icons on the desktop, leaving only the copy she made, which is really on her desktop. This one she could delete if she wanted. BTW, she may need to logout and then back in to see the change. Hi, Joe. Thanks for the reply. Another good question. I'll have to ask her if she has SuSEWatcher running. My wife and I do not have SuSEWatcher running because it screws up our icon placement everytime we reboot or turn off the pooter. What an annoyance! We assume our daughter is not running SuSEWatcher but maybe she is? Thx. again for one more thing to check as we investigate this mystery. :o) Gil
