Hello, all-- I see an ad for a Sony DRU-820A internal DVD+R Double layer burner drive. J&R in New York wants $59.99 for this. I am not so interested in burning or copying movies, but my DVD player and CD burner seems to be on the fritz. The ad says "for Windows." Does anyone have this working on SuSE, and with what kind of hassle, if any. (I'm on 10.0.) TIA--doug -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.10.5/404 - Release Date: 7/31/2006

get one by LiteOn No problems cdrw or the newer dvdrw. You need dual layer ability to install Suse from the DVD. On Tue, 2006-08-01 at 19:40 -0400, Doug McGarrett wrote:

This applies to the commercial Suse, but not if you burn the OpenSuse DVD from the net (which is single-layer). -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. Watts

He might still want to burn DVD of which I have never seen a single layer only burner. Single layer readers however do exist, usually as combo drives and there are issues if you check last years messages. So unless your strapped for cash why do cheap. You must hang out in strange circles then.... Of the 6 burners I have in the house, 5 are single layer only. I think it was only a year or two ago that you couldn't *find* a DL burner. Finding SL *readers* however is a lot tougher job.

same here! we have have all but one single burners... the double stuff cost too much for it to be advantageous. (never seen a single? wow) Are you sure you aren't talking about when the front says 2X? That is the speed, not double layer. Thanks, George

Say what? I just got an AOpen DL burner (+ format only, alas) last year for less than $70 Canadian, which a friend picked up for me in Seattle. That price included all taxes, etc bringing it across the border. Now I can get a DL burner (both formats) from several manufacturers, out of Vancouver BC, for much less than that. All the AOpen, LG, LiteOn, Samsung and Sony drives are under $50Cdn, except for the external drives. Local prices are always higher here, since it is a very small city, but still under $70 for all of these.

sorry- may bad I meant the media is cost too much, not the drives. All our drives are singles but one, and last time I priced the media it was way more than singles. Even when I bought the double burner I didn't care that it was a double D burner - it was on sale for cheap. Again, it's the media that they stick you for. The media cost more than double than the singles. Thanks, George

That is certainly true, but I don't consider it any reason not to buy a DL burner. If you need one even once but don't have it, you're toast. Besides, the price of the media is bound to come down soon, certainly once BluRay and HD get on the market in any quantity.

Sure.... but what would your experience have been about a year ago... or two years?

/snip/ I have removed the word SPAM from the subject (it ocurred 3 times), I hope that doesn't cause any agita anywhere. I raised the original question. So, another question: Several folks advised that the LiteOn drive is a good and compatible one--actually they seem to make several--but the LDW-401S got rave reviews from one of the testing outfits, and the best price I found it for is US$79 plus shipping. Are you telling me it's less than that in CAN$? (One outfit on the 'net wants $235 for it!!!!! Or was it $325? Whatever it was, it was ridiculous! Anyway, if it's really less in CAN$, maybe I should buy it there, and pay the duty. --doug

I'm particularly curious as to why my stuff suddenly is showing up with a "forged" recvd_helo dropping in the headers. Not only does the right not know what the left is doing, it seems the right hand is also a bit confused about what it wants to do. BTW, if you peek at the headers of the mail you refer to above, you will find that, at least for a time, myrealbox.com was on some sort of blacklist -- go figure.

Shouldn't be a problem. I have a LG and a Philips DL and a LG SL in two of my machines, they work better in Linux than in Windows! :-O The LG DL is a 16x burner, which is what k3b does, Nero under Windows will allow a maximum of 4x burning on SL DVD's :-( --- David Wright Wright Information Services Europa "I got to go figure," the tenant said.
