[SLE] Can't boot from new HD
I did a complete re-install of SuSE 6.3 onto a new Seagate 30.6 GB HD. I installed a 10 MB /boot partition on hda1, then installed the balance of SuSE above the 1024 cylinder limit. I had heard that if /boot was benieth the 1024 cylinder limit everything would be OK. It boots from a disk and runs great, but I can't get it to boot off the HD. The new HD is a UDMA 66 type. Well, 6.3 didn't have great support for ATA66 drives. Have you tried the new 2.2.16 kernel that is on the FTP site. This might work better for you. * Lawrence Sayre (lsayre@stratos.net) [000909 18:36]: -->I did a complete re-install of SuSE 6.3 onto a new Seagate 30.6 GB HD. -->I installed a 10 MB /boot partition on hda1, then installed the balance -->of SuSE above the 1024 cylinder limit. --> -->I had heard that if /boot was benieth the 1024 cylinder limit everything -->would be OK. Sounds like a misconfiguration with lilo. Did you make the HD bootable? might have said no somplace where you should have said yes. 1. Get the system up and use cfdisk to look at the bootable flag for the first partition. Turn it ON if it is off. Be very careful with cfdisk! Look at /etc/lilo.conf it should say "boot=/dev/hda linear" in the first few lines. Rerun /sbin/lilo <ctrl><alt><del> 2. If that does not work use YaST.. choose <System Administration> <Kernel and boot configuration> <LILO configuration> Read carefully.. but you cannot wreck anything, so be cool :) Have a lot of fun :) Regards, -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
As explained to a friend of mine, this was not told in the books ++++++++++++++++++++++++ My hard drive ST317221A has 2096 cylin, 255 heads, 63 sectors, (33415 load -zone) 16.441 Gig If I go 16.441 / 2096 = 7.84 meg per cylinder to go below 1024 cylinders 7.84 * 1024 = 8.028 Gig Since SuSE will only start to install at the end cylinder and go to the start (see page 24 installation book, Suse 6.4) I have to make linux 16.441 gig minus 8.028 Gig = (8.413 Gig) or bigger to get LILO to work on my hard drive &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& In order for Hard drive to dual boot LILO.CONF (in /etc directory) has to be in (SUSE linux) with in the first 1024 Cylinders So as far as I know to fix your problem Lawrence you may have install SuSE starting on Cylinder 1024 through to the last Cylinder. or is there some other way of doing it

Yo, SuSE'r My experience is that I can do what ever I want by just forcing & cheating on Lilo. I got a 13GB harddisk with Win98 (primary) on the first 2œGB, the rest is a second primary partition housing SuSE with a small /boot partition and 7œGB / + two 128MB /swap, rest of harddisk is another small /boot + approx. 2œGB / where I run another Linux dists for testing. This extra Linux is lying beyond 1024 cyl without Lilo installed at all, Lilo is installed from SuSE on MBR. When trying to put the extra linux in in YaST it won't accept it, instead I write liloconf by myself. Once Lilo is configured to boot this install I can install new dist's on the extra partition without ever bothering about changing Lilo or installing it in these other dists. I have been doing several variations of this for quite a while, also having SuSE way back on the hd and other dists in the middle, on this hd I have run up to 5 OS at the same time, 4 of them booting from Lilo on MBR. I like Lilo! I have to add that I haven't had that great luck when installing Lilo from other dists than SuSE 6.3 & 6.4, I wonder why that is! Good luck & all the best, Helgi Örn Eric Richards wrote:
