I'm having a similar problem with KDE 2.2Beta1, which I believe I've fully installed: pwa@suillus:/aux/home/pwa > rpm -qi kdebase Name : kdebase Relocations: (not relocateable) Version : 2.2beta1 Vendor: SuSE GmbH, Nuernberg, Germany Release : 0 Build Date: Sat 30 Jun 2001 04:49:10 PM EDT Install date: Wed 04 Jul 2001 03:38:40 PM EDT Build Host: heron.suse.de Group : X11/KDE/Base Source RPM: kdebase-2.2beta1-0.src.rpm Size : 33453701 License: GPL Packager : feedback@suse.de Summary : KDE 2 base package: ksysguard daemon Description : This package contains kdebase, one of the basic packages of the K Desktop Environment. It contains among others KWIN, the KDE window manager; KONQUEROR, the KDE browser; KControl, the configuration program. This package is not needed if you want to start some KDE 2 applications, but not to use the KDE 2 Desktop. The behavior I see is a little different: instead of getting a blank screen, I get a frozen screen, which I can easily unlock by moving the mouse or pressing a key. But what I can't get is the screensaver. Any chance that this could be Nvidia-related? Paul

Actually, I now think it *is* Nvidia-related: it shows up only on those screen-savers that are labelled (GL). Paul

No, it's not. Paul if you really hate nVidia..get a different card my friend ;) I had the issue with 2.2 beta1 (sorry I forgot to post the fix)...by default the Priority the screensaver runs at is low. I loved it to about 40% up from low and it worked fine. Sorry for now posting that earlier :) -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org ----- The only argument for the superiority of Windows over UNIX is that General Protection Fault outranks Colonel Panic.

Ben, I just tried raising the priority all the way and I still get the frozen screen. And with a non-GL screensaver I get the screensaver. Moreover, I've been making changes to my Nvidia setup in an effort to get the acceleration going, and I don't remember having this problem a couple of days ago. Paul

I have my XF86Config file pretty much mirroring Curtis's and OpenGL up and running. I use the pipe screensaver and haven't had any issues. I can send you the config file for X and the switch2nv_glx script I use ( Which was modified by Mads and myself)..it works. Let me know..in fact if I get more then 3 requests for it. I will just post it publicly. -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org ----- The only argument for the superiority of Windows over UNIX is that General Protection Fault outranks Colonel Panic.

I'd like to get it -- and maybe Mads can arrange to have it included in the SuSE support database. I gather from the fact that you wrote your own that the Nvidia one doesn't work quite right -- otherwise, why bother? What was the problem with it? Paul

Hmm. Script vanished into the ether. Could you send it again? And by the way, what was the malfunction in the original SuSE script? Did it do anything useful at all? Paul

It didn't look in the place that the new GLX was put for some odd reason..or so that's how I remember it. It's been about 6 weeks since it was done. Strange script to rely so heavily on hard coded paths and file names. Note to those who attempt to use it: it seems to only work on the 1251 build, and it must be in /usr/X11R6/bin to work. Incidentally, it is identical to the one shipped with 7.2, and the screensavers work for me Anders On Monday 09 July 2001 00:31, Ben Rosenberg wrote:

Actually, another way to test whether the cause is anything in the current .kde2 directory is to create a new user and see if the problem occurs within that user's account. Paul

Same here. Misery loves company, I guess. The behavior I get is similar but not identical: instead of a black screen, I get a frozen screen (unfrozen by pressing any key or moving the mouse). If you want to experiment, you might try installing the various mesa* packages and the xf86 package. But don't install either mesasoft or mesaglu -- they apparently conflict with the Nvidia drivers. The xf86 package comes from SGI and is a replacement for mesaglu. You'll find that among other things, these programs plant library files libGL* in /usr/lib. Paul
