Ok, I had some free time and was bored, so I went to the Linux Printing Database, which is newly moved to www.linuxprinting.org. I looked up the HP LJ 2100 (which is what I have). YaST2 has always chosen HP LJ5 drivers for it. But the Printer Database shows the ljet4 driver supporting up to 600dpi, while the plxmono driver supporting up to 1200 dpi. Whoohoo! As far as the 2100M, it says that it is a postscript level 2 printer, so you should be able to just select postscript printer and 1200dpi. HP LJ 5
If the 2100M does Postscript then using Postscript is much more convenient.

The printer has postscript 2 emulation, so I wonder if I can use the postscript option at Yast?

Alright, WTF. I tried the pxlmono driver listed on the Printer Database, and a) it isn't available from yast. I had to use lprsetup and tweak apsfilter, b) It didn't like the 1200dpi idea. It printed a 5 page document as 4 blank pages and one page w/ one line -- 'PCL XL --invalidfontresolution'. So I tried the ljet4 driver at 600dpi. Worked pretty well. But now that I have it in my head that it should be possible to do the full 1200dpi on this printer, I really want it to be so. :( Any suggestions? Did anybody manage to make HP DeskJet 710C work under Linux (SuSE 6.4), and how? I followed all the articles I could find in Support Database, with no success. All I got was that this command gave exact manufacturer and the model: cat /proc/parport/0/autoprobe So, if there is anybody willing to disclose his success story, I am ready to learn! (All the details, please - I am a Linux newbie) Thank you in advance... R.Soskic p.s. How about HP LJ 1100A ??? Set it up through apsfilter as an lj4dith printer. Set resolution to 600dpi. Enjoy! -- This Email is 100% Virus Free! How do I know? Because no Microsoft products were used to generate it! You might want to configure the printer with Yast1. First go to the /etc directory and drag your old printcap away to the trashbin. You will make a completely new printcap when you run YAST1. Then use YAST1 and under SystemAdministration -> Integrate Hardware into system -> Configure printers, select your printer. This may work. Reset the file permissions you changed back to their original form you first had. Good Luck, Jonathan

Adding to that, I ran in a very queer problem after my update: I could print (from netscape and everywhere else) but "lpr asciifile" failed. This was due to "securety=secure" (in rc.config) and apsfilter sourcing rc.config (set to 600 permission). The sourced variable -something wether to use a2ps- couldn't be read and printing failed. It sounds more likely to be the above, but if it fails check that too... Many thanks for your answer. I followed your first suggestion, but I get this result: (1) the "lpr" command is apparently succesfull, but nothing happens; (2) the "lpq" command lists correctly the jobs, but adds: "no spooling, no printing". I did a very stupid mistake. When I changed the permissions of the lock file, I did not take a note of it, so I do not know of which lock file i changed the permission... can someone help? Many thanks again, g. ps I am leaving now to teach in another town for 3 days, so I'll read you kind answers next Thursday. ------------------------------------------- E-Mail: Guido Milanese <gmilanese@mclink.it> Homepage: http://fly.to/arsantiqua 12-Nov-00 - XFMail on Linux + + + + + + NON NOBIS DOMINE + + + + + + -------------------------------------------
