RE: [SLE] SuSE 8.1- always runs at 640x400x16
Thanks, but I used PL O'Smith's method and it worked like a charm. Quoting Smith: Royce, Follow these steps: 1. Boot to init 3 only, do not start Xwindows or KDE (at your lilo/grub screen, type init 3) 2. Log in at init 3 level as root 3. run sax2 4. configure your card, monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. 5. save configuration after testing 6. if all went well, at the prompt type rcxdm start 7. you should be at your login screen at the resolution you set Patrick --- KMail v1.4.3 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206 -----Original Message----- From: Catimimi [mailto:Catimimi@libertysurf.fr] Sent: Monday, December 16, 2002 2:09 PM To: Rick Reumann; Cho, Royce; suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] SuSE 8.1- always runs at 640x400x16 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick Reumann" <maillist@reumann.net> To: "Cho, Royce" <royce.cho@pw.utc.com>; <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Sent: Monday, December 16, 2002 6:29 PM Subject: Re: [SLE] SuSE 8.1- always runs at 640x400x16

I had a somewhat similar problem where despite selecting a larger resolution YaST would keep setting me up with a lower one and I think it also happened after I selected the 3D acceleration. Patrick on this list helped me by having me configure it by loading up sax2. I believe we disabled the KDE desktop and then ran sax2 from the command line and configured from there and everything was fine after that. The sax2 interface looks pretty much just like the YaST screen for setting up the monitor and resolution, etc so it's easy to follow.
edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file in the section screen, make sure that on all the lines the modes are in decreasing order. If not you have to correct, after depth 16 or 32 you certainly have 640x480 first. Yast set the modes in the order you choose them. That's all Catimimi.
