I had such an issue some weeks ago. The reason for this was, that I have played with powertop to optimize the power usage of my notebook. One of the suggestion of powertop was to disable polling of the cdrom drive (This includes dvd drives, too). If that's what happens to you, the following command may help: sudo hal-disable-polling --device /dev/dvd --enable-polling If in doubt, try this command, even, when you have not used powertop before. It doesn't do anything harmful. It simply restores the default.
