I run openSuSE 11.3. I have installed kedtoys4, and then I recognized, that also a new NVIDIA driver was installed. After the update I recognized, that my desktop looks like this: http://www.urbakken.dk/desktop.jpg This means, that all what was located in the panel before the update, now is spread all around the desktop. What can I do, to get rid of that ?. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It didn't help? Was there no plasma-desktop process? Try it again. If that fails replace kquitapp with killall, and if that doesn't work, I don't know what is drawing your desktop - you'll have to give me more info. Sorry, I should have pointed out that you are cleaning the user's desktop config.
Here's what I got:
<snip>harmless warnings</snip>
Not quite ok, but the desktop got organized again.
What do you say to the what is not quite ok ?.
It's a bunch of debug output from restarting the desktop, but it's normal and harmless. The devs are clearing the causes of those up but missing features from the old days and crashers have a higher priority. Now I'm interested how your desktop got quite so messed up. You just installed kdetoys and a new nvidia driver? That should not explode your panels. Do you have a backup of your old .kde4 dir so I can compare the config files with the messed ones, or a screenshot of what it looked like previously? Yes ok, and you are right, I just have tested to do an upgrade from 11.2 to 11.3

Eric and I just corresponded on IRC about this. It turns out that Eric 'zypper up'ed from openSUSE 11.2 to 11.3, then installed kdetoys4. Because 'zypper up' does not update repo urls for you, kdetoys4 came from an 11.2 repo, downgrading the base kde platform to 11.2 versions. Since kde apps are designed to be backward compatible with old config files but not forward compatible with newer config files, his desktop got messed up. Moral of the story: To update an installed system, the safest way is currently to boot an installation medium and perform an update outside the running system. This allows you to update repo versions and disables stale repositories. If anyone else makes this mistake, the remedy is to manually update all zypper repos to the newer version and then run 'zypper dup' to get a consistent system again. This won't fix any config files that have been addled by the forward-backward do-si-do, though, so the old wisdom of backing files up before an upgrade still holds. -- Will Stephenson, KDE Developer, openSUSE Boosters Team SUSE LINUX Products GmbH - Nürnberg - AG Nürnberg - HRB 16746 - GF: Markus Rex Thanks for the chat Will. I just would try to change the repos, but Yast2 is ill too. With so many issues, I find it better to do a clean install of 11.3.
But for NVIDIA I haven't found good help since Sax2 was killed from the 11.3 package. I have before tried to install 11.3 on another HDD, but due to the NVIDIA I couldn't get it up running as before using Sax2. Is there now good advices on how to's ? Erik see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers#The_repository_way First thing after 11.3 is installed and running - add the Nvidia repo ' zypper ar -f ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.3/ nvidia '
install the appropriate nvidia driver (x11-video-nvidiaG02 most likely) reboot. This automatically takes care of disabling kms, adjusting xorg configuration, rebuilding initrd everything. Has worked flawlessly for me on a few different system (can't say the same for ATI drivers, grrr) Regards, Tejas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Tejas Thanks for your reply. I have made a clean install of 11.3 here, and have nearly followed your advices. I also installed the Nvidia repo just after the install. Had a little problem there. I have used http instead of ftp. Having changed that it worked, and a zypper refresh did the last.
