[opensuse] What is the purpose of udisks-helper-ata-smart-collect ?
every 30 minutes, I have the following in my log: Nov 11 17:26:38 tvbox dbus-daemon[522]: **** Refreshing ATA SMART data for /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/ata1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda Nov 11 17:26:39 tvbox dbus-daemon[522]: helper(pid 8929): launched job udisks-helper-ata-smart-collect on /dev/sda Nov 11 17:26:39 tvbox dbus-daemon[522]: helper(pid 8929): completed with exit code 0 Nov 11 17:26:39 tvbox dbus-daemon[522]: **** EMITTING CHANGED for /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/ata1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda a) what is the purpose of this, and b) can/should I stop it? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (8.4°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I'd like to stop it because it causes the disk to wake up far too often. I presume the smart check is skipped if the disk is sleeping, but writing to the log will keep it awake. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (8.2°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

a) what is the purpose of this, and
Well, obviously it is collecting the SMART data of your drive and making them available via udisks.
b) can/should I stop it?
Disabling polling might still work: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udisks/+bug/638765 Furthermore, udisks offers the --inhibit-all-polling option, too. Not sure that is so obvious, but never mind - I don't see much reason for pulling those data every 30 minutes, though. If at all.

Yeah, I saw that one. Very subtle solution :-) -- Per Jessen, Zürich (8.2°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

As we have smartd I see no point in another service doing the polling... - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. It also seems odd that udisks should be polling the data when there is nobody asking for it. Anyway, my problem was solved by creating: /etc/udev/rules.d/80-udisks.rules : KERNEL=="sd*[!0-9]", ATTR{removable}=="0", ENV{ID_BUS}=="ata", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="disk", ENV{UDISKS_DISABLE_POLLING}="1" I thought I might even disable udisks altogether, but apparently it's started by the dbus-daemon when somebody needs it. I don't know who that is, this system is only running a mythtv frontend. Now I just need to configure yslog not to write statistics and --MARK--, and hopefully the drive can power down for even longer. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (7.9°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
