/etc/init.d/dansguardian start that's all 'service' is in red hat. A shortcut to /etc/init.d/
chkconfig dansguardian on
chkconfig dansguardian on or insserv dansguardian -- Certified: Yes. Certifiable: of course! jabberID: anders@rydsbo.net

Thanks. Especially for including the explanation too. Steve.

I would use rcdansguardian start. All services can be reached/executed without path with the rc prefix, e.g. rcapache2 start -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Only packages done by SUSE provide a symlink /etc/init.d/xxxxx -> /usr/sbin/rcxxxx . I doubt that you'll find it in packages like dansguardian. Philipp

So what is wrong with ln -s /etc/init.d/xxx /usr/sbin/rcxxx or must we
always cater for MCSEs?

Nothing is wrong with the symlink. The point was, that you can't expect to find it in packages not done by SUSE, as Richard's mail seemed to imply. Philipp

My point was that making the symlink is so simple and part of normal
Linux/Unix sysadmin that even MCSEs should be able to get their heads
round it.

I assumed the it was a suse package indeed. philip is right that if the packages is not doen by suse the rc* link might not be there (how inconvenient). -- Richard
