[opensuse] upgrade => 11.3
Hi all, Just before the immenent release, i was wondering if there is a preferred upgrade procedure. For normal (i.e. iron) machines it is rebooting from cd/dvd and do an upgrade. However for virtual machines (XEN in my case) that's not an option. Previously (11.1 -> 11.2) i used these staps: - apply latest patches (the un-escapable backup) - remove all repositories - add repo's with the new version - upgrade zypper - zypper dup - restart vm This used to work good in most cases, but left me with some unstartable machines in other cases. Hence my Q if there is a "official" preferred/recommended way of upgrading virtual machines? hw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It says that the live cd is not for upgrading. Only for installation 'as is'.

I thought the update/upgrade with zypper is now 'officially' supported: http://wiki.opensuse.org/SDB:System_upgrade (but hidden in the SDB namespace) Greetings pistazienfresser -- - openSUSE 11.2 with GNOME 2.28.2 (or KDE 4.3.5) and Kernel Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-default (or pae, Ubuntu 10.4 LTS 'lucid' 2.6.33-22-genetic, MS Win XP) - Samsung X20 (SX20S) with Pentium M 740 (1730 MHz), Intel graphic 915GM, 1400x1050 - openSUSE profile: https://users.opensuse.org/show/pistazienfresser -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why not? I've booted VMs from CD in the past. Can this not be done with DVDs? fyi: My host OS was MacOS when I did it with CD. I think I've also done it with Linux / VMware, but I'm not as positive. Sure it is. What VM are you using?? It is quite possible in VirtualBox. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've installed XEN domU images directly from (a copy of) the installation tree. So if (!) upgrading by means of booting through a cd/dvd image is the preferred method, i presume i have to alter the xen-config file and have it point to a 11.3-net-boot-image, Not? I'll will try it with some old 11.0 machines.... hw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As said i did try but no success I made a xen-config file like:disk = [ 'file:/srv/distro//iso/suse/open/11.3/openSUSE-NET-Build0694-x86_64.iso,sde:cdrom,r', 'phy:/dev/xen-productie/kc3001-boot,sda,w','phy:/dev/xen-productie/kc3001-swap,sdb,w', 'phy:/dev/xen-productie/kc3001-syst,sdc,w', 'phy:/dev/xen-productie/kc3001-data,sdd,w' ] memory = 1024 vcpus = 2 builder = 'linux' name = 'kc3001' dhcp = 'dhcp' kernel = '/srv/xen/install/openSUSE_11.3/vmlinuz64' ramdisk = '/srv/xen/install/openSUSE_11.3/initrd64' vif = [ 'mac=00:16:3E:30:72:00' ] localtime = 0 on_poweroff = 'destroy' on_reboot = 'destroy' on_crash = 'destroy' nographic = 1 extra = 'install=http://kc-suse-install/openSUSE_11.3/oss/ xencons=tty textmode=1 ' Booting was succesful but not possible to upgrade: Two error messages prevent me from upgrading: The partitioning on disk /dev/sda is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table.
