[opensuse] Leap 15 install "bios_boot" partition?
Trying to install Leap 15 over prior partitions: # Leave rust disk with swap and /home alone # reformat and install onto old / # format new SSD as new /home I *thought* I had that set up via expert partitioner, but then I got the message "Missing device with size equal or bigger than 2 MiB and partition id bios_boot". Google handed me: https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/533410-Warning-about-missing-bios... which seems spot on, but not *quite* helpful? I have the old /boot/efi partition, which I told the partitioner to leave alone, and at 500GB, it is more than big enough. The current 42.3 was the original SuSE install, so I have no recollection of how that partition got there (i.e. if SuSE said to have one, and I accpeted, or if that was there from Windows and I left it alone, having some notion that it was needed, or...?) Also, do I need to explicitly tell the partitioner to set /boot/efi as a mount point on that old partition? So, is it that I need to be fussier with the bios boot selection when telling it to boot from the USB drive (with Leap 15 ISO on it), and insist on "UEFI" or do I create some "Bios Boot" partition somewhere, or ignore it all? Unfortunately, I cannot affort do screw around with this reinstall, as it is on my main/only workstation machine. Lots of TIA. And this - which is almost *identical* to my situation: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/suse-opensuse-60/upgrade-opensuse-l... Seems I should check the bios setup, and if necessary, create a small /something? partition - not mounted, type Bios Boot?

Create it, needed or not. It is very small and makes YaST happy in the cases where it is not needed. Happier when it is ;-) I think the link I just posted to another thread, and there to other threads, explains when it is. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Yes. Instead of jumping to the expert partitioner, get the thing to make a proposal on the disk you intend for the system, then modify it. You will see that it has a "bios_boot" partition. This way YaST will be happy and it will put there what is needed, if it is needed. More info here: <https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2018-06/msg00101.html>

Wait, /boot/efi is 500 GB? That is a waste of space. 500 MB is way more than enough. 200 MB is typical.

If your computer is booting in EFI mode, yes. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)
Nevermind. Bios "boot from" setting was the culprit. On Sun, Dec 02, Michael Fischer wrote:

I had same problem with Leap 15.0 install on HP ProLiant DL380 server. Created bios_boot partition manually, and installed still complained that it does not exists. Somehow get around in an awkward way, can't recall exactly how. On 12/3/18 12:49 AM, Michael Fischer wrote:

For me it was 1) Make sure bios is set for EFI (not legacy) but NOT UEFI 2) Make sure when changing the boot order for the install, get an EFI USB selection and NOT a Legacy USB one... 3) Just be sure the EFI partition from (manufacturer, previous install, etc.) is size>=256MB and set to be mounted at /boot/efi
From there, all went fairly smoothly.

guess it would depend on your particular bios menu. remember where this uefi/efi came from -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I may be screwing up my terms slightly... but my Dell bios-en definitely have such a setup. NOT Secure Mode (where the installer will prompt for accepting certificates, and which I am thinking is UEFI) NOR Legacy modes - but still wants that /boot/efi. Not in a position to reboot and note the exact terms from my bios. The install summary definitely had the words "grub2" and "efi" in the same line :) Michael -- Michael Fischer michael@visv.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You are saying that EFI is not the same as UEFI, that there are two different entries in your BIOS setup, one for EFI, another for UEFI? AFAIK, EFI is "Extensible Firmware Interface" and UEFI is "Extensible Firmware Interface". Apparently, the former is the name Intel used initially, and the other is the universal term. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface> -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
