[opensuse] how to connect to Android 5.1?
I just bought a cheap android-5.1 phone to play a bit around. Now I want to move/copy files from my computer (OS 13.2) to and from that thing, but it doesn't work, no matter what I try... If I connect a USB-cable and choose MTP the phone shows up with the "connected devices" with its brand name on my desktop, then I click "open with file manager", dolphin opens - and shows: nothing. After a while dolphin shows a red message: "The process for the protocol mtp was terminated unexpectadly" (my translation, have it in german). Googling told me to better use go-mtpfs. I installed it with that "one-click-install". I entered in a console (tried as user and as root) and get the following: # go-mtpfs /home/daniel/android/ 2015/10/17 18:54:56 OpenSession failed: LIBUSB_ERROR_TIMEOUT; attempting reset 2015/10/17 18:55:02 Configure failed: OpenSession after reset: LIBUSB_ERROR_TIMEOUT Hm, how can I get file access to my phone? (It is very easy with my Android 2.2 phone. It appeared as a normal disk in dolphin. I want to have this somehow. How?) Thanks for hints! Daniel <RANT> I am completely aware that the main purpose of an android phone of course is to give google access to my private life and not to serve the customers. [...] Daniel, I use a combination of ES File Explorer on the phone and Filezilla on my computer. In ES File Explorer tap the menu button (3 horizontal lines) at top left and then choose Remote Manager. You can then turn on/off an ftp server on the phone, which you can connect to with Filezilla (or another FTP client of your choice). I use this wirelessly through my router, but I think it will also work through a wired link (not tested). thanks Bob, at least this works over wireless. But as it is ftp (and not sftp) isn't it then very public what I send from PC to phone or vice-versa? I would prefer it over cable for this reason, but I don't know how to make sure my data flows only thru the cable and is not distributed unencrypted thru the air... Can you light my darknes? OK, what I suggested doesn't work through cable. However, when I connected my phone by USB to my computer I was able to see it in Dolphin and navigate through the folder tree. I was able to copy a file from the phone to my computer by drag and drop. Didn't try the other way. My phone is an HTC One running Android 5.0.2. I think that's called Lollipop, and the latest version is called Marshmallow. - -- Bob Williams System: Linux 3.16.7-7-desktop Distro: openSUSE 13.2 (x86_64) with KDE Development Platform: 4.14.3 Uptime: 06:00am up 7:55, 3 users, load average: 0.16, 0.05, 0.06 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iEYEARECAAYFAlYikooACgkQ0Sr7eZJrmU75XQCeK7bJTHu+7nYckCr3y57lQd6R vR0AnjOupNnnouLBlgoPKEbHqzS34ULS =fBul -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Do you mean that I would have to install gnome or xfce, then log out from kde and in to one of these? Or just install Nautilus and use it in a window under kde? Well, for me it is no problem, as I have all those desktops fully installed. My idea was just to try. Using Nautilus inside KDE could be a bad idea, though, because sometimes this is remembered and has some side effects. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

1.1.7 is the latest I see in Yast... (I only run these commands in a root console to be sure it'snot because of a user restriction)
Can you try: ps auxw|grep mtp

I've been running Android for many years, and I never cable the phone to the computer. Phones have become increasingly locked down to make this option less useful unless rooted. I have a wifi router, with encryption turned on, and I simply use ES file explorer to access via FTP, or Samba shares. I suppose if you don't own your own router, you might not want to trust the one in the coffee shop. But with any cheap router there is little reason to fear any interception of your content using widely known means of protecting your wifi signal or connections. It just works, and works fine. I simply can't be bothered to cable up any more. I've also used Bluetooth, as it is short enough range that your worries would have to be in your back yard to be an issue. And KDE warns about attempts to pair and requires a pin. The MTP agent in KDE 4, (OpenSuse 13.2) seems to work just fine, but some areas of the phone are write only. Yes I see your rant, but either you use the device or you don't. There is no evidence that Google grabs your private images. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
