[opensuse] Bye bye Sue 10.3
It was nice playing around with 10.3 but after loosing the use of my CDrom and unable to use my TV card I am back now with 10.2 where everything functions as it should. Have no idea what has changed within the two versions but with my older hardware, a P II I ran into too much troubles with 10.3. I will be back regularly to update 10.3 and see if it has improved enough to get it working on my machine. For now I have at least a working platform. If this is the direction of newer software I see black for older hardware. Lets not give up hope. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I also can't use my TV card, and yes, there is a Bugzilla or two. I removed the card and use and old B/W, real, tv instead. :-/ - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Hi, I would be interested in how Xubuntu behaves on your hardware. I use it for anything that is older than a P4 and it works greatly. Kind regards Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

it's of non use to change to a newer distro (eventually, when it becomes obsolete, but it's not the case of 10.2) a working system :-) however, losing a cd seems too much, even for a new distro. if not a hardware problem, fill a bugreport, thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not a hardware problem because it works in 10.2 ;). Thanks all for the idea of bug report. Will be the next thing I will do after looking for more than two weeks for my cdrom. That my TV card stopped working was not discovered until some days ago. A reason for me to first go back to my 10.2 and than look for solutions. You will receive a confirmation email, and you have to answer that one. The answer can be empty, the important thing is the reply address. That's all. If your spam filter removes that confirmation, check your spam folder. If your provider removes it, complain to them, and contact the list owner so that he removes you manually. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. very easy. Switch using this lively mailing list from getting each mail to just reading without getting the mail. This works via a newsreader and gmane. I do this for very long now and apart from the occasional gmane server failure, I am totally happy that I can use the list without getting overflooded by mail. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Can't help you with the TV, but I bet the fix in the release notes to use the old drivers ide code will get you that CD drive back. There seem to be a number of problems with the new libata drivers and optical disks. Sounds like you hit one of them. Tejun Heo of Novell is trying to get a big collection of "ATAPI" related fixes into the vanilla kernel, and I assume they will eventually come out for 10.3's kernel. Dear Greg, Looked into the libata discussion, took a look at work from Tejun Heo and did not understand a thing. Thought though that it had something to do with my CDrom problems. Looked at his patches and do not know how they could help me for the moment. The discussion was also not very clear about the particulair problems where Tejun was working on. Glad that you more or less confirm that my problem may be around for a solution. ;) My TV is of lesser importance. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't know what problems do you have with the TV card but you can try looking to bug #330109 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=330109). In another one, already closed (328771 and 328773). It is also broken upstream, as far as I know: I had to patch the kernel to make it run: ] Try and edit tveeprom.c and change ] ] { TUNER_ABSENT, "Philips FMD1216MEX"}, ] with ] { TUNER_PHILIPS_FMD1216ME_MK3, "Philips FMD1216MEX"}, And after that, the analog tuner worked, but slow (no overlay mode), and with no sound. Even the digital part has no overlay mode, meaning high cpu usage, and pauses. I removed the card as useless. I turned to a B&W "real" TV instead (4"), which in turn was replaced a week ago by a second hand 15" TFT hanging from a nail in the wall. I bought that card because it was reported as working. I wrote a note in the wiki stating that it doesn't, so that others are not mislead. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
