[opensuse] Do you know what is this bay in my laptop?
Hi, Do you know what is this bay in my laptop? http://susepaste.org/24703726 I see the word "MDC", perhaps it is this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_daughter_card but there are no photos there to compare. (The photo is a bit out of focus, I should have used a tripod) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

It would really help to know what make and model your laptop is... (then I could cheat and go pull the service-manual .pdf :) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

I think they're called Modem Daughter Card. At least on IBM Thinkpad back in the days. Somewhere in the mess in my basement I think I have one. I don't know what it is but it can't be that. Wikipedia says it is 30-pin while yours is a 12-pin connector.

Not focus so much as camera shake, I believe. But a tripod would have fixed it :) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I couldn't find a good picture of the socket, but I did find something that is supposed to be a "modem daughter card" and it looks to me like it would fit both the plug and space in the chassis: http://www.techpartswarehouse.com/product/CO-510100-001-HP-56KBPS-Soft-Modem... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Here are removal and installation instructions for a "modem daughter card" on another laptop. Not only does the plug and form-factor look the same, but it has two screw holes in the same place as your laptop: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/migr-68274 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Wow, thank you people, you found out what that thing is! :-) I'm certainly not going to buy a modem, of course, but I was curious what that unused bay could be for. I think I bought this machine around 2010, I doubt there was a market for modems even then. And thank you Andrei, ellanio, Per, for the links to my laptop manuals, I'll save them :-) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" (Minas Tirith))
