Hello, I'm looking to upgrade our perl installation on a SuSE 7.3 box. Currently we're running the version that came with the distribution, however there are some newer perl modules we need to install that require 5.7.1 or newer. Does anyone know of a place where I can get an RPM'd version of perl newer than 5.7.1 for SuSE 7.3? Thanks in advance. -- Preston Kutzner | IT Manager Mitchell's Law of Committees: Any simple problem can be made insoluble if enough meetings are held to discuss it.

That version of SuSE has been discontinued by SuSE not very long ago, after 9.0 was released. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
Yes, I realize this, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any place where I could still find packages for it. I know that release isn't supported anymore by SuSE, but I was hoping there still might be newer perl packages available by someone. On Mon, 2004-04-12 at 15:41, Carlos E. R. wrote:

Why not just install them from source? Unlike a lot of other applications, Perl does not seem to have a lot of problems mixing Source and RPMs. What packages were you looking for, exactly? -- -Josh Berkus Aglio Database Solutions San Francisco
I'm trying to install MailScanner and it requires some extra perl modules. However, some of the modules are complaining that they want newer versions of Perl installed (5.7.1 or greater). I don't have the module information handy right now as to which ones are complaining, but I'm having a devil of a time getting them to compile. Hmmm. Upgrading the Perl core when the original is from an RPM is somewhat tricky. In theory CPAN can do it but I've always had trouble with CPAN. If upgrading SuSE is a bad idea, then I suggest you get on IRC and log in to the #perl channel on irc.perl.org (or irc.develooper.com), and ask for help there. -- Josh Berkus Aglio Database Solutions San Francisco

Sorry then, I wouldn't know. I also have another old machine, which I have with SuSE 7.3. Recently I updated from sources SpamAssassin - and that is a perl program - and it worked flawlesly. I don't know how dificult would it be to compile Perl from sources... you could try to recompile one from a newer suse version. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Compiling perl itself is actually quite easy. I'd be worried about what other applications would break due to incompatibilities with the new version of Perl. -- Josh Berkus Aglio Database Solutions San Francisco
