[opensuse] Should an md5sum of an ISO and against the dvd match ?
I've downloaded the 12.2 iso and the md5sum. Knowing that the old DVD burner shot craps, I bought a new one. I burned the ISO file and, using k3b, burned the ISO file. Running md5sum command against the newly burned DVD, do not match the ISO md5sum. Should they match ? How do I get k3b to run the md5sum against the newly burned DVD ? At this step, you have to run the check.

I burned the ISO file and, using k3b, burned the ISO file.
And here, you should have told k3b to verify the burned media.
Running md5sum command against the newly burned DVD, do not match the ISO md5sum.
Should they match ?
Yes and no... you have to make sure it verifies only the exact length. The dvd can be padded.

I use a compare of iso size bytes of the image and the dvd. I don't have the code I use in this machine to post it here. You can also verify with k3b but I don't have it installed here to tell. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. do in order: 1. download the iso 2. check the md5 of the iso file _before_ burning--if it does not match, do NOT burn disk (and see help link [1] below to repair the iso) 3. burn checked iso to disk at the slowest possible rate you can set using the highest quality media you can afford 4. boot from the newly burned install disk and use its built in test by selecting "Check Installation Media" from the menu of the first green screen during boot (see http://tinyurl.com/b856ekd) 5. if the disk fails the self-test, do NOT install from it.. lots more, lots better info available at [1] http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Download_help (which is the "Download Help" link on the download page) dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
