Install the Gnome environment from your 8.1 CDs/DVD. When you next log in, you should find that Gnome is now listed in the session menu (I forget what it's called in the KDM login screen, because I use gdm/Gnome2 - sorry!). It shouldn't need anything more than that. YaST ought to set up the login menus for you. I have installed Gnome now, but cannot find the KDM. Nor can I get Gnome to start up from the user prompt by using startx gnome. There is a fault in the setup I'm seeing.
It shouldn't need anything more than that. YaST ought to set up the login menus for you.

Hi again. After a reboot it all was ok :-)
