What do the following error messages in the error log mean? Sep 8 12:17:51 james kernel: printer.c: usblp0: error -110 reading printer status Sep 8 12:18:03 james kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout I get them on a SuSE Linux V8.2 system running on a Pentium IV, the printer is a Kyocera FS-1010 connected via an USB Port. I tried to use the postscript driver and also the PCL driver, the problem manifests itself on both and postscript is unbearably slow. Thanks Peter

This indicate USB problems - i.e. problems regarding the plain data transfer via USB - this has nothing to do with printer drivers.

Try the parallel port (I guess this printer has one). See the manual and http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/04/jsmeix_print-device-parallel.html how to set up a parallel port if is doesn't work out-of-the-box. Thanks a lot Johannes, Is it possible that faulty printer memory may too cause these symptoms? The usb board on the printer has been replaced, the usb ports on the motherboard have been replaced and a new cable is being used. I tried the parallel port in the past too, and the printers response became very slow too; although there were no errors in the log. Regards Peter Sutter

Try to use the parallel port in interrupt mode. Try to use the parallel port in faster modes (set them in the BIOS). Perhaps you may have to set a matching parallel port mode in the printer too?
