RE: [SLE] Pentium CPU ?
Hi Jim, -----Original Message----- From: James (Jim) Hatridge [SMTP:hatridge@straubing.baynet.de] Sent: Saturday, May 13, 2000 2:42 PM
I was given three Pentium MoBs the other day. <G> Two are great... but the third I'm having a small problem. It does not have a CPU. The markings say that I can put a 50, 66, or 75 mhz CPU on it. But I have only a 133 mhz CPU. My question is can I run this CPU on this MoB? Also if so, which setting should I use, ie 50, 66, or 75?
Is the MB a socket 5 or socket 7. I had an old P66(?) with a socket 5 and a newer pentium chip wouldn't fit the older socket. (It was a while ago and it may have been a 486/66, can anyone confirm this?) There were the old first Pentiums, like the mentioned 66 (or similar odd speed) model. As far as I remember, these were 5V types and had a different pin layout. The P75 was the "first" (smallest) with the newer and "current" pin layout. I never cared about socket types. If I would, I'd mess them around. Hi Tim, As far as I know, all Pentium chip are pack with the same package, therefore I don't understand what you mean? Instead of trying to figure out what socket 5 or 7, you can take a look on the socket itself. If the "holes" are in square matrix, they are most likely 486. If the "holes" are in diamond matrix, they are Pentium (most likely). Be careful that the new FC-PGA is looking the same as the "Pentium" socket and never ever plug one into it, your green note will fly away. Please correct me if I make any mistakes. Bye. Hi Tim et al, It's a socket 7. I've got it running now, THANKS to everyone. Looking at it closer there were no jumpers on it, only the printed message. So I just closed my eyes, plugged it in, prayed, and turned it on. It worked first time. It defaulted to 75 mhz, but looking in the BIO setup I was able to change the speed by software. The MoB will take any PI from 50 up to 200 mhz automaticly. Later!
