Improved laptop support from 10.0 to 10.1?
Hello, Is there experience if the support for an IBM Thinkpad T41 laptop improved from 10.0 to 10.1? Where did it improve? How about the upcoming 10.2? I have to say that I will probably install an own kernel myself anyhow, as many reports tell that suspend2 works better on the T41 than the in-kernel stuff. My other systems are still on 10.0, and it would ease patching and upgrading if I can just use the established processes with the laptop; therefore I'm checking if there is really an advantage in upgrading to 10.1 in that situation. I don't know about IBM, but for me, on my Acer Aspire 5670 I had the following improvements going from 10.0 to 10.1: 1) Wireless worked, I just needed the firmware driver. On 10.0 I couldn't get it to work, even with ndiswrapper. 2) ACPI works. In 10.0 it worked too, but for some or other reason my ethernet would not work if ACPI was enabled. The only problem I had was that the ATI driver would not install before I did an online update (probably a kernel problem). This let to some outbursts of violence, because it took me 3 days to finally do the online update. I think all those problems should be sorted out by now, but discounting that, I am, all things considered, happier with 10.1 on my laptop. HTH Marius

I knew there was something I forgot. Wireless under 10.1 rox! Under 9.3 - 10.0 it was "okay" but under 10.1 on the same laptop it is fantastic. I have a home network with WPA encryption. Under all previous versions, I was unable to have the laptop auto-connect. Now it just works. When I susupend and go to work, the laptop wakes up, recognizes either my work Wireless (with WPA) or wired connection and does its thing. This is what I was waiting for and was well worth the initial pain of using Zen under 10.1 - which has since been fixed, I'm told.

I didn't have this issue, because I used the 10.1 DVD from Linux Magazine, which included the proprietary ATI driver, allowing me to install direclty with 3d support OOTB. -- Kai Ponte www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request

Thanks all for replying. It looks as if I will try 10.1 first; better wireless and ACPI is a real plus that I want to get. Joachim -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Joachim Schrod Email: jschrod@acm.org Roedermark, Germany

Joachim -- I seem to remember that some who upgraded from either 10.0 or 9.3 could no longer use their built in AC7 56K Modem. The drivers that use to work were not included with 10.1 and they were no longer available for downloading at all (from anywhere). If you use the modem, you will not be a happy camper ... :-(
