Anyone can compile and run a 2.4.x kernel in 7.3 and make it runs ok? I am trying to compile different versions of kernels 2..4.x and i cant run it ok When it tries to load the image it hangs up in the.. Ok..now booting the kernel The last i tried is the 2.4.17 and do the same.. I am thinking maybe its question of the graphical frontend of this lilo version ,i `ve tried to give framebuffer support in the 2.4.17 ..but i cant find the option in this version.. Is there anyway to make lilo dont load the graphical interface that appears in the boot ?? Maybe someone have a similar problem and knows how to solve it ? I can only run the kernel that is in the distro , the 2.4.10-4 GB, but i need to use a newer kernel Help!!!!!!

Just stop trying to apply vanilla kernel to SuSE distribution without applying all patches from suse :) 2.4.16 that sits on suse's ftp (pub/suse/update/7.3/kernel/2.4.16) is compilable and runnable without any problems (well apart from goofy thing with unmountable /boot partition if you using reiserfs on any other, and applied reiserfs rpm from that kernel package ) -- While anyone can admit to themselves they were wrong, the true test is admission to someone else.

Mmmmmmmmm...its ok Thanx sergei But i need support for ext3 ,and in the web from ext3 there is no patches to 2.4.x kernels or the ftp where is the ext3 utils dont work or something like this.. is this kernel built with ext3 support? I think so, since ext3 is one of default choices for 7.3 pro.. so 2.4.10 that comes in with it has ext3, and so does 2.4.16 that sits on suse ftp.. Btw - why using ext3? reiser is faster and smaller in size (since its journaling only metadata, when ext3 does metadata and data) - just getting UPS solves issue with loosing data.. :) Its just out of curiousity question, since i choose reiser - i'd like to know what i am missing :) -- What I tell you three times is true.

I have no problems with my separate /boot partition: / is reiserfs and /home is ext2. I'm running that 2.4.16 + the reiserfs rpm. What I do want, however, is to use a vanilla 2.4.16 kernel so I can patch it and install Win4Lin, but I'll need to apply all the SuSE patches as well. If I untar the new sources then try to run "make cloneconfig" it tells me there is no target to make cloneconfig. (The SuSE kernel is running). So how do I get around that? Thanks David

In the Source-Dir of Kernel (usually /usr/src/linux) zcat /proc/config.gz > .config make oldconfig make cloneconfig only exists if you want to _compile_ a kernel from SuSEs sources, it is a patch done by SuSE. Rene

(problem with reiserfs comes not just after update, but after you recompile that 2.4.16 with installed updates for reiserfs modules.. same true for emu10k1 module) anyway... to get patches you just go to update/7.3/kernel - there is bunch of bz2 files which sppse to be kernel patches.. if they arent (i never paid much attn to it :)) - there is group of kernel patches in /pub/people/mantel/next which as i recall - patches to turn vanilla into suse kernel :) But then - i could be wrong ..
