I've spent hours trying to resolve this issue. I've searched for a solution, found a couple, none appear to work. Received suggestions and recommendations from a very active person at @suse.de, still no luck. On a new install of SuSE 10.1, we all know there are problems with online update. I've tried various solutions, with the same result. During installation, online update runs and updates yast, therefor it restarts. There are a couple of interations of online update before the installation continues. Once the installation is complete, I have an icon on the taskbar that indicates there are two updates required. I run it and it says the updates are installed and the icon shows 'no updates available.' If I run online update from yast, it shows a number of updates available. When I select the accept button, the online update window goes away, without installing anything. If I reopen it, the same list of updates are listed. If I run yast from the command line, there are no errors displayed when I go through this online update scenario. I've been instructed to run the online registration. When I do, it pops up a browser window, I login and enter the activation key. I close the browser and the online registration window cycles back through the browser asking me to again activate. No help there. I've been instructed to add a new installation source from: http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux10/downloads/ftp/int_mirrors.html I've successfully done this before on other versions of SuSE, yet when I attempt it here, no matter which site I chose, I always get the same error: Cannot create the installation source Try again? No help there either. I'm at my wits end on this one. I've been using SuSE since 6.4 and rely on it as my primary Linux solution. I've got a number of clients running SuSE, but if I can't get this update to work on this box, I'll be looking for another distro. This is the most frustrating problem I've dealt with. I've re-installed on this same box 6 times, trying to get this to work. I can't upgrade any of my other boxes or my clients until I've resolved this issue. -- Until later, Geoffrey Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin

No, you're not reading it correctly. In 10.1, the online update window in YaST lists all updates, whether they have been installed or not.
Cannot create the installation source Try again?
Which URL exactly are you trying to add?
No help there either.

So, you're saying that when the window simply goes away, the patches are already installed, thus there's nothing to do? It is quite misleading to see a bunch of patches listed with check boxes to select them from. How is one to know if the patch is installed or not?

Multiples from the list. I first tried one that is local to me: ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/ Then: ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/
No help there either.

My confusion lies in the fact that when online update reopens, I see the same patches listed prior to the attempt to run online update, how do I know what needs to be installed? -- Until later, Geoffrey Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin

As posted elsewhere in this thread, there is a difference in color of the check marks. Blue and Black. (Not good color choices...) Further, if you hover the cursor over any check mark it will tell you explictly if it needs install or is already installed. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Hi, Geoffrey, I feel the same frustration. Instead of commenting your issues one by one, I'll just tell you how I did with the 3 machines I've installed up to now. During initial installation "Online Update Configuration" adds a patch repository and I run YOU several times. Invariably, after installing new packages, YOU stops working the same way as in your case: the window just goes away. From that point on I use Zen Online Updater, which is the icon on the taskbar. Since I am logged in as root during installation, I just click on the icon and install the updates. Then I set up automatic updates overnight with Yast2/Software/Online Update Setup. When I notice that the taskbar icon still shows patches were not installed, it means that they may require reboot (such as a kernel patch), because I left the option "Skip interactive patches" checked. So, I run "rug up -t patch" as root in the command line and accept licenses, reboot if needed, and my system is up-to-date. (Stupidly it does not allow you do add a privileged user to run the Zen Updater by just clicking th icon. You would have to do that with "rug add-user" in the command line.) From time to time I check if my patch repository is still OK (active), by running "rug sl", because the Online Updater just tells you "no software updates available", which may mean that your system is up-to-date, or that it cannot reach the repository. If I find that my server is inactive, I delete this source from Yast2/Software/Installation Source and run yast2/Software/Online Update Configuration again, which adds a new working repository. All these are known bugs that Suse is working on (see Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.novell.com/index.cgi ), and they hopefully will be fixed soon. Obviously this is not as smooth a ride, as we have have become accustommed to with Suse, but it has kept me going, while I wait for the Suse guys to fix the updating process. They already updated libzypp in the past days, and I hope zmd is also fixed soon. I have another 10 machines running 9.3 that I want to upgrade (I always do fresh install of the root partition), but I will hold off until the online update issue is solved. I've used Suse since 7.1 myself and I want to give them a chance to fix the mess created by this transition of update methods. Once it's sorted out, they are promising a new 10.1 ISO that contains all the patches that make it work, as we got used to: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2006-Sep/0887.html I am eagerly waiting for that. I didn't see this documented anywhere, thus I thought it was crashing. It is the standard *nix behaviour. Nothing said, all is well, ie, nothing important to say.

I've been using Unix since 1976, so I think I'm comfortable with recognizing 'standard unix behavior.' The difference in the way online update used to work and how it works now is what threw me.
So how do I know the difference between patches that need to be installed and the ones that are already installed?

I guess I missed that documentation as well. -- Until later, Geoffrey Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin

Thanks for your followup Carlos. I've already responded to Marcus' response, so I'll not do the same here. I did notice the icon in the taskbar and did select it. It installed two updates. This added to the confusion as I was still seeing patches in the online update window that I thought needed to be installed. -- Until later, Geoffrey Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin

I was also fooled by this new behaviour of YOU (if this is any consolation...). As in your case, the fact that the new Zen Online Updater only shows patches when there ARE new patches available only reinforced the notion that something was wrong with YOU. Now I checked the colour scheme and it all looks correct. RTFM on us... Carlos FL
