[opensuse] Solved : openFATE #306323: Zimbra Mail Server Support for openSUSE 11.x
Hi, According to features request on https://features.opensuse.org/306323 : Zimbra Mail Server Support for openSUSE 11.x, I would like to confirmed that openSUSE 11.x could running Zimbra Mail Server without problem, both version 5.0x and version 6.x.x (tested on version 5.0.18 and version 6.0 RC1), with only a minor changes to bundle perl on Zimbra Binary Installer. I post the tutorial here : http://vavai.net/2009/08/30/zimbra-6-0-rc1-on-opensuse-11-1/ and also build Zimbra Appliance with SUSEStudio, http://vavai.net/2009/08/31/zimbra-appliance-with-opensuse-11-1-vmwarevirtua... As of version 6.0, Zimbra has been dropping openSUSE from their supported distro due to the reason : lower installation on openSUSE. I think it would be a bad idea and bad marketing stuff to let openSUSE as second-class citizen at Zimbra Community, so I try to increase the Zimbra+openSUSE installation statistics by providing the easiest way to install Zimbra on openSUSE. -- Best Regards, Masim "Vavai" Sugianto /************************************************************/ Blog (ID) : http://www.vavai.com/blog Blog (EN) : http://www.vavai.net Community : http://www.opensuse.or.id /************************************************************/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Huh? Looks like Zimbra is just a groupware application. No reason it wouldn't run on opensuse. It looks very much like an eGroupWare clone. Anything with that much licensing crud and "trial" licensing bs on an open- source package deserves nothing more than rm -rf zimbra. Try eGroupWare. If you really want to try zimbra and are scared because you can't find an "openSuSE" package, just download the source. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Yes, Zimbra is a collaboration suite or in another term, a groupware, but there is a reason why it would not run on openSUSE 11.x (10.2 and 10.3 would run with minor changes). openSUSE 11.x failed to run Zimbra and it was my main reason to pick an openFATE request.

Thank you for an email response, but have you tried it by yourself ? I've tried it and it failed in first attempt and at the end it was successfully solved after a few trial & error. My email just want to reconfirmed that Zimbra finally could be installed on openSUSE 11.x by replacing perl package bundling on Zimbra with openSUSE perl package. Anyone who tried to running Zimbra on openSUSE 11.x or Ubuntu 8.10 & 9.04 or any distro with Perl 5.10 bundled may have disagree with you. If it SHOULD BE, maybe, but if you have try it, you may have different response :-) -- Best Regards, Masim "Vavai" Sugianto /************************************************************/ Blog (ID) : http://www.vavai.com/blog Blog (EN) : http://www.vavai.net Community : http://www.opensuse.or.id /************************************************************/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Some time ago had a look at various linux based groupware solutions, The Horde, Kolab, Citadel and eGroupWare. By far the easiest to setup and install was eGroupWare. Zimbra is one of many in this area and was far from having the easiest to setup requirements then. In the main agree with David in suggesting eGroupWare for SMB or personal use. If you are working for a large company Lotus Notes, OPenXchange, and others are available (large companies can afford the dosh). - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. I could be completely wrong, but wouldn't this be better done by setting up Zimbra (+mods for openSUSE) in the openSUSE Build Service? /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (20.2°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, you would not wrong. Before submit the openFATE request, I've posted the problem into this list and thinking about solved the problem by rebuild the binary installer within OBS. I remember that I have contacted Yaloki to asked the possibility about it. Actually, I have no experience about programming and OBS usage, so that's why I tend to used the primitive solution by making a simple script to do what I want. Setting up Zimbra+mods for openSUSE within OBS would greatly appreciated. -- Best Regards, Masim "Vavai" Sugianto /************************************************************/ Blog (EN) : http://www.vavai.net Community : http://www.opensuse.or.id /************************************************************/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
