Please clarify what you mean by "got this message," especially since you say the machine is "Linux (only)." Are you talking about a phishing attack of some sort? Viewing <http://www.updatew.org/> is ... humorous, to be sure. Apparently after "exhaustively" searching my system (for about 15 seconds), I was warned about three extreme threats to my physical, emotional and technological health. (Plus, I assume, my hair could fall out.)
[18:25:52] Update ®: WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION ...
Everyone knows that "WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION"!
**************************************************** I wouldn't dare run this
Run what? If you click the "warning" window displayed after the "security scan", you see a "shopping cart" display listing your $19.95 purchase of life-saving software (using the European convention of using the comma for the decimal point). "Proceed[ing] to checkout" shows you a window in which you may enter your credit card number. Just your everyday phishing scam. A trap for those foolish enough to spring it.

The message appeared before I even updated KMail. I erased it, so I can't go any further than this. Maybe the machine has been hacked, I don't know, but I hope not. There is no other operating system on this machine except SuSe 9.3, and there never has been, except SuSE 10.0, which I had to dump and regress to this. There is a Windows machine on the router, but it has been turned off for several days. I don't know if this is a phishing attack, or some kind of deal to get some nasty software into the machine, which is what I really think it is. If there were a Windows list similar to this one, I would certainly post there also, but I don't know if there is. As I said in the original post, I would certainly not snap on the URL in either OS, but I suspect it would not damage the Linux machine. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

oh god... the rediculous animated display showed a bunch of typical windows file names. DO YOU HAVE WINDOWS SYSTEM FILES ON YOUR LINUX MACHINE???? Of course not. That's like having a gas-fueled water heater....and getting a post card that your electric water heater is being recalled, even though yours is gas... and getting all worried because it even listed the specific part of your ELECTRIC WATER HEATER that need to be replaced. Use some plain basic logic. Sheesh!

What on earth is it you think you ran? Visiting their Web page presents a (terse) video simulation of a system scan. No access to your system occurred during this "scan."

I've no need to be timid - I'm running linux after all ;) I visited the site, and like Randall, I was treated to a silly dog and pony show in which the remote system was "scanning my system" (as IF!), and found several serious issues. I played along with the gag and clicked the "remove all" button and up popped a shopping cart and they were ready to collect my payment info. I cancelled out at that point, but it was good for a few chuckles. Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I doubt very much if it's a scam to sell fake software, although that would be bad enough. With the credit card information they require, they can harvest working credit information easily. Check this code snippet from the page's embedded script and its sophisticated method for finding infected files: I never realized that random number generators were so useful! if(parseInt(Math.random() * 100) == 5) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ { if(parseInt(Math.random() * 10) <= 5) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ { meminfectedcount += 1; ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ }; objinfectedcount += 1; infected.innerHTML = '<img src="images/shieldred.gif" align="absmiddle" width="17" height="19"> ' + objinfectedcount + ' items detected, ' + meminfectedcount + ' issues found'; button.style.visibility = 'visible'; }; if(parseInt(Math.random() * 100) == 5) { if(parseInt(Math.random() * 10) <= 5) { meminfectedcount1 += 1; }; objinfectedcount1 += 1; infected1.innerHTML = '<img src="images/shieldred.gif" align="absmiddle" width="17" height="19"> ' + objinfectedcount1 + ' items detected, ' + meminfectedcount1 + ' issues found'; button1.style.visibility = 'visible'; };
