well, compare the cost of the two systems (including management of spare tape readers, interfaces and computers, special rooms...) compare to the cost of duplicating any two years the complete on disk solution... and the time you will have to recover the special file you need and was backed ten years ago :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://news.opensuse.org/2009/04/13/people-of-opensuse-jean-daniel-dodin/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Actually I already looked into that in quite some detail. There _is_ an issue in having a tape drive that will still read 10-year old tapes, but it's perfectly possible with e.g. STK 9840 drives which maintain compatibility with even 30 year old 3480 cartridges. That takes care of the interface and computer issue as well. Special rooms - well, nothing very special is needed. Normal airconditioned datacentre facilities will do. The main issue/cost in copying data around every two years is in staffing and facilities. A secondary issue is the actual shelf-life of a harddrive which (to my knowledge) isn't documented anywhere. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (16.4°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
