Hi SuSE Folks, How do you retrieve an old mail from the list server easy or not ??? i know how to find an "old mail" in the Archieves, and Dylan's "X-Message-Number-for-archive: 168837" intrigues me, but how do you get a message from "list server" ??? Please enlighten me. HAND, Gar -- __________________________________________________________________ McAfee VirusScan Online from the Netscape Network. If you can read the lines attached to the bootom of every message on the list and follow "For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com" advise, you get in response, among other instructions, To get messages 123 through 145 (a maximum of 100 per request), mail: <suse-linux-e-get.123_145@suse.com> Regards, -Kastus

When you subscribed you received an email with instructions to which you had to answer to get really subscribed. You did read it, didn't you? ;-)
To get messages 123 through 145 (a maximum of 100 per request), mail: <suse-linux-e-get.123_145@suse.com>
The other interesting command is:
Even better, get the whole thread with an email to suse-linux-e-thread.10000@suse.com
The bad news is that the responses (both cases) come in a format not compatible with normal list mail: it includes a long paragraph with mail list instructions, and diferent headers, so that it doesn't insert itself in the mailbox threading :-( -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

So, if I know the message number ( of a message that has been deleted) which I think is in the header of that deleted message, not sure of that, then I can get that thread/message which is in a format that Kmail cant read? Seems a lot easier and less fussy to simply ask the originator off-list to resend his message directly to me. Of course we wouldn't have all these interesting discussions/learning sessions then. Makes perfect bureaucratic sense to me. :) ra

Yes, no. - Yes, you can retrieve it. - Yes, the number is in the headers. - If the message is deleted, so that you don't know the ID, then you can retrieve the thread, which will include the one you deleted. - Of course KMail can read it: It is an email! What I said is that the message has a different body, because it has list instruction inserted at the top; and also the headers are different, so that the filters you may have will probably not place the mail in its usual place, sorted as it should be sorted.

Not exactly: you may retrieve a missing mail without bothering the originator, in a question of minutes. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Since monday the archive number is also visible in the html archive. We changed that. Unfortunately its only for new messages that now come in, not for the old that are already there. And what of the poster that does not keep all of the outbound posts but deletes them. They no longer have it to send to you. Ken

Or there could be a simple solution. Try man formail for full information. Save the message to a text file and: formail -s procmail < file.txt And procmail will deliver it as an original to your recipied directory in a format that kmail can read. yes but that implies that procmail is being used. What kind of magic do you know that will devine the message number of a lost/ deleted message? Still seems like an awful lot to do to get a copy of one lost message. I doubt if there are many people who would go to all that trouble very often just to help out a stranger. ra

No, his trick is for removing the extra text from the mail forwarded from the robot. As for the number, you have the ID number of any other mail in the thread, and that suffices.

Well, I I delete one of the messages by accident, yes, I would. I like to keep the message base complete. It is easier/faster to request from a robot than from a person. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
