[opensuse] Does openSUSE 11.1 support Intel ICH9R as an AHCI out-of-the-box
I have an Intel® Matrix Storage ICH9R setup as RAID but openSUSE doesn't like it and always shows disks as non-RAID sata. So I'm thinking of dismantling the RAID to switch to AHCI in the BIOS. I loaded Linux AHCI driver from JMicron (I have ahci JMicron controller too) so I wasn't sure if ICH9R was also using the same driver. Before I do that, the big question is: does openSUSE 11.1 provide ahci driver out-of-the-box or is there a Linux ahci floppy driver download? This system won't boot as usual because GRUB goes with the BIOS (ICH9R is RAID), but openSUSE sees all disks as individual sata. Some one who knows or has an experience, please let me know. This's a new machine & the first time I put Linux. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I can't believe this to be true as I'm running 11.1 on that same chipset. Please try this: boot the rescue system, log in and do 'dmraid -ay'. Any output from that? What does 'ls /dev/mapper' show? Besides ICH9R, I also have JMicron RAID controller on this same MB - they are both Software RAID I believe (their firmware controls instead of hardware). I'm not with the machine now, but I checked what you said.
I recently updated BOIS of this MB - not sure if that broke something.
However, I have very serious issues with this opensuse 11.1 install.
I have DVD writer that isn't detected by GUI burning tools ( cdrecord -scanbus can see it). Soundcard won't work.
but the biggest issue is GRUB knows the RAID but not Linux, so disk order changes dynamically after boot. I had to make floppy boot but later get: /dev/sdd2 cannot be found, do you want to fallback to /dev/sdde2 Y/n?
My question was: does opensuse 11.1 have AHCI support buil-in?

Ok thanks: I did dmraid -ay
then
ls /dev/mapper/
control isw_dihgfaif_Volume0_part1 isw_dihgfaif_Volume1p1_part3
isw_dihgfaif_Volume0 isw_dihgfaif_Volume1 isw_dihgfaif_Volume1_part1
isw_dihgfaif_Volume0p1 isw_dihgfaif_Volume1p1
now, how can I add volumes into initrd, /etc/fstab and GRUB so opensuse will detect RAID when the system is booting?
I saw these 2 howtos: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/DPT-Hardware-RAID-HOWTO/ and this: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Software-RAID-HOWTO/ WHICH ONE SHOUL I USE? this's the first time I'm using raid other than "mdadm" with opensuse.
I did: "man dmraid" but not sure what? I also saw this site: http://www.linuxmanpages.com/man8/dmraid.8.php
also, now if I start partitioner, I see the Device Mapper RAIDs.
Thanks

I learned how to load dmraid, but since I never used it before, I need the code to add into /sbin/mkinitrd for O.S 11.1 and what module to load in /etc/sysconfig/kernel. Since you have the same system, Please email me templates.
Markes put tutorial on this site: http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1664&page=3
Please be generous like them and sorry that I was frustrated in the beginning. I understand that you're busy, so if you do not reply, I will find a way out.
(Jot down modules loaded by dmraid, put them in /etc/sysconfig/kernel, copy couple of lines of draid script into /sbin/mkinitrd, run depmod -a, run mkinitrd, adjust GRUB's device.map & menu.lst). I guess that will be it.
I'm rehearsing this, but someone in this list may benefit, too.

The LiveCD can be useful for these types of questions, but in your case it may not help. Its worth trying at any rate before you go too far. Especially if you can test / reconfig with no data loss. </snip> Greg i cannot tell you about the raid function completly. When I first installed my new system with openSUSE 11.0 I installed as raid zero with two sata drives (320GB) and everything ran for over a month. Then decided to install as two seperate drives with 11.0 on one and 11.1 on the other. Still works fine. I have an intel motherboard (DX48BT2) with an x48 express chip set (ICH9R). I do not have a Jmicron controller since I found alot of questions about problems with them when I considered ASUS and Gigabit motherboards. Sorry I cannot help more. My eventual goal is to create a raid five environment after I by another disk. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
