I had the same problem in two situations: 1. on a siemens PC, it would happen if the "disk access mode" or some such setting in BIOS would be set to "other" (as opposed to DOS). I've only seen that setting on Siemens scenic PC. Change the setting to DOS. 2. When I compiled minix support as loadable module, and tried to boot it from a diskette, it would only display LI and then stop. To be able to boot from a diskette, minix has to be compiled in the kernel not as a module. Serguei Bostjan Müller wrote:

Hello all, Does anyone have any ideas about the following: down the very left hand side of my screen, the color is kinda messed up and distorted, but just a strip roughly a half inch wide down the left side. I have tried Sax, Kvidtune, etc. to try and fix this, by moving the root window to the right so that it is not on top of this ugly area, But both my (digital) monitor controls, and these programs wont get it done: i.e., I can move the root window to the right, but then I have a big black stripe down left hand side, and there is no way to move the whole thing (whatever that is) back to the left. I dont have any such problems with windoze. Everything works fine in Linux otherwise, but I am just worried that basically i am looking at the very (left) edge of the image put out by the gun in the monitor. (and if I move the thing further to the left, the whole root window starts getting yellow and distorted if that helps) Hope this makes sense. That is weird alright. If it works under windows, then you must be using the wrong video driver under linux, or have it otherwise setup wrong. Maybe if you posted your video card type, what Xfree driver you are using, and even the XF86config file; maybe someone will see what is off. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

I ran into the same problem a few days ago. I simply booted from the boot-diskette and re-configured lilo in Yast. I may have had to re-install lilo as well, don't remember, but is simple to do. Hello Bostjan, did you do *anything* prior to that like a kernel compile? did you rerun lilo in that case? Also if you have both an IDE disk (that includes IDE floppy devices BTW) and a SCSI disk, Linux will always try to boot from the IDE disk (even if it is an LS120 with no diskette in it) unless you put some bios options in lilo.conf, in the "global" section. Mine looks like this: # LILO Konfigurations-Datei # Start LILO global Section disk = /dev/sda bios = 0x80 disk = /dev/hda bios = 0x81 boot = /dev/sda #compact # faster, but won't work on all systems. #linear read-only prompt timeout=100 vga = normal # force sane state # End LILO global section I only mention it because this precise question keeps coming up on this list and it might be a factor in your problem.
