[opensuse] speeding up software installation wizard
Hi, Just after DVD installation, I switched to internet repositories. Then I added Packman repositories. Say I want to install aMule (from packman). One problem is the time spent before installation is complete. When launching the software installation tool, it builds a kind of installable software list. Ok. But it seems (as I see the time spent) to build it EACH time I launch it! Wouldn't it be faster to cache the list somewhere? Then when search for the package to install, it is very slow again. I have a decent CPU (2GHz, Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM) architecture, I think something really need to be donne on this thing. Don't you think? Or is it a my-side problem? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Well, you could disable update/refresh for the "stable" distribution repositories (I assume you have configured repositories for the SuSE distribution, both oss and non-oss). These never change and can very well be cached. But neither packman, nor suse update repositories, can be cached. They are likely to be updated with new packages almost every day, and yast simply has to fetch new lists each time. /Lennart onsdag 24 januari 2007 11:31 skrev Mihamina Rakotomandimby (R12y):

In the yast2 Installation Sources window, to the bottom right of the list, there's a button which pops up a menu where you can disable and enable either an entire source or just the refresh. I.e., first select the source you want to disable, then click the button and disable refresh. -- !++ ! Lennart Börjeson, Cinnober Financial Technology AB ! Industrigatan 2A, S-112 46 STOCKHOLM ! I definitely agree. The software updater is down there in the try all day long. Why can't it take care of these tasks in the background so that when you wanted to update it would have all the information it needed already in hand? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

That doesn't solve the problem for the people that do not have a permanent internet connection. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
