I have a small (big) problem with a firewall.
When I am able to connect to the computers on the inside from computers
that are connected to the Internet and not to the local network I get that
output from tcpdump:
08:54:10.737324 dial5.hws.edu.1028 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: R
2405807:2405807(0) win 0 (DF)
08:54:16.927324 dial5.hws.edu.1030 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S
2473345:2473345(0) win 8192 (DF)
.....
If it does not work I get this output:
10:41:27.830000 dial5.hws.edu.1026 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S
2625827:2625827(0) win 8192 (DF)
10:41:30.970000 dial5.hws.edu.1026 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S
2625827:2625827(0) win 8192 (DF)
10:41:37.560000 dial5.hws.edu.1026 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S
2625827:2625827(0) win 8192 (DF)
10:41:50.550000 dial5.hws.edu.1026 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S
2625827:2625827(0) win 8192 (DF)
The first packet that I get when it is working is missing. Am I right
with the assumption that this is the syn packet? Sorry if it is off-topic
but I don't know what the output of tcpdump means. I read the man pages
but I could now find the information what the first packet is that is
missing. Thanx for any help.

Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you
lose your job. These economic downturns are very difficult to predict,
but sophisticated econometric modeling houses like Data Resources and
Chase Econometrics have successfully predicted 14 of the last 3
recessions.
