I have been trying to get my ADSL service to work with linux using the instructions found on http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/hoe_adsl_pppoe.html
I installed pppoed from Suse 7.0 CD. I am enclosing the most recent log output from today's configuration and testing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My ADSL service
provider will provide no technical support for use of ADSL with linux.
Thanks. Mike michael.flug@snet.net
Log output from /var/log/messages shows activity based on re-boot and then an attempt to start ADSL services using command /usr/sbin/pppoed :

Is there a reason why you're not using Roaring Penguin? I think it'll
be much easier for you.

Now, it looks like you are getting an IP which implies that a connection is made... I havn't tried pppoe myself, as my provider uses pptp. Maybe yours does too ? I got a weird question pertaining to DSL, I've seen this type of conversation before and didn't understand it. My DSL is connected with an ethernet ETH connection and works quite well. What kind of DSL requires PPP (more to the point pppoe) in order to work?
The connection I am on is on a Redback, and this why it's PPPoE. /Dee

Providers that use PPPoE instead of DHCP or static IPs. Nick

One uses PPPoE if that is the protocol the service provider uses to connectclients to the DSL service. It allows them easier management of the service. It is just PPP (that is used in many cases to connect dial-up lines) that is run over the ethernet connection. Some don't use this, such as yours. Recently I heard of some providers using PPTP (whatever that is) to provide DSL. On Sun, 04 Feb 2001, S.Toms wrote:

If you happen to be using an Alcatel USB ADSL modem, and get it working, I would really appreciate some help. Currently the only way I can get mine working is by using a Windows 98 box just for the ADSL modem that the rest of my Linux network is connected to, and it is a real was of hardware. Cheers Phil

Hi Michael, I assume that you use the T-Online connection... Check following : - Is the network card that is hooked to the DSL modem configured, as proposed in the SuSE support database ? - a dummy ip adress (for example 192.168.1.1), a net maskmask (matching the previous 255.255.255.0), no default router/gateway (empty !!). DHCP doesn't help here. - Is the previous network card the one configured for use with pppoed ? check /etc/pppoed.conf Pascal ....

You configured your device to use a dchp assigned adress. If this is the Interface were the DSL modem is connected, assign a fix adress, **without default router/gateway**.
