We have a user that uses Adobe PageMaker and other similar stuff and her win machine constantly crashes. We would like to move her to Linux but need to find a similar product for her to use first. Any ideas? Thanks, Jason Joines ===========

I know this is a Linux list, but you may be creating more work here. This could be a couple of issues. * Are you running at least Windows 2000 with SP3 or Windows XP Pro with SP1? Win98 and the like will puke on products like PageMaker, Acrobat, etc. * Could this be a hardware issue? Bad memory, disk, board, etc could also be at fault. Looking for different products like PageMaker and then training the user to use them may be an awful lot of work on your part and they may not be as happy with the products as they were with the originals. -- John LeMay KC2KTH Senior Enterprise Consultant NJMC | http://www.njmc.com | Phone 732-557-4848 Specializing in Microsoft and Unix based solutions

You could have a look at Scribus. http://web2.altmuehlnet.de/fschmid/index.html -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Jason, This question is quite timely as there is an alternative coming up for Linux, which may prove to be much better than PageMaker! I used the program extensively on the Amiga computer where previously I had used PageMaker on the Mac & IBMs. It is called PageStream and has just recently been released for Linux. Of course, the suggestion for Scribus is an alternative as well, although not quite as developed. The PageStream is also available for Windows & Mac, but my understanding is that the Windows version is not their most stable. Here is your url: http://www.grasshopperllc.com/ She can get a competitive upgrade price right now and with orders now, a free TextFX will be included. It was difficult to convince the author to build a Linux version as he was under the assumption that Linux users were all freeloaders and wouldn't pay for a useful program. I think he is wrong and told him so. I haven't had a chance to get it yet, but am convinced it will find a nice following in Linux as it did on the Amiga!
