Re: [opensuse] Sun JDK 1.5.10 and JDK 6

Any ideas when JDK 1.5.10 and JDK 6 are going to be added to the opensuse reps?
Not gonna happen in 10.2.
Why not? I know that you can get it from SUN, but with that installer you can not get it to run properly on SUSE linux. -------------------------------------------------------- What kind of "not work properly" it seems OK to me? Ok, you got me.. last time I tried SUN installer was 1.5 update 8 or 9 I think. At that time, the installer seemed to install it only for me - i.e. only one user in the system. Compare that to YaST, where you click install, and then it's installed for all users (and you do not even have to think where it will be installed as it's automatically installed in the correct place). Quite a difference I'd say! And as I do not want all my users to install personal copies, I'd say it doesn't quite work properly. And by that I mean, it doesn't work the way it should in linux or SUSE. It's the same as when you install something on windows and it happens to break it. Everybody accuses of windows, even though the fault was mostly from the software that you installed as it didn't follow windows conventions for example. Besides, installing a rpm with YaST is so easy that there is no need for a "windows like easy installer". But I might be totally wrong as I haven't actually checked the java 6 installer. So, correct me if I'm wrong and if it has been changed. -- HG. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

We released JDK 1.5.0 Update 10 as security update at least. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Great. But just to be clear I was echoing the "Why not?" question to Simon's claim, not to the statement "Not gonna' happen...". I plan to start working with Java 6, soon, and will install Sun's release, naturally. I don't really expect any problems (since they've never occurred before), but I'm curious about what might have gone wrong for Simon.

I'm the one who claimed that it doesn't work as well as rpm's. There are lots of people on this list who think I'm stupid. Some will undoubtedly write to list that I'm so stupid that I should not be allowed to use SUSE. They are all correct of course... but still I plan to use this (as I like YaST). The installer probably works, but I just do not know how to use it. That's what it is. What I wrote earlier was based on previous try with 1.5 update 8 or 9 (I think bundled with Net Beans). This is what happened then: I downloaded the installer and started it. It quickly became obvious that I was not able to install it for all users (it didn't ask for instance if I want to install it for all users or just me and ask for root passwd). So I hit cancel and try again as root. This time it asked me where to install it. And I just didn't know! I've used SuSE with YaST for years without having to know where the programs go. I didn't know. Now I tried the new installer. This time no GUI but CLI which just unpacked it under my home dir. Trying "java -version" showed that it was not installed as I wanted. Yes, the files were probably there and after couple of mv's and ln's it would probably worked. I just didn't know which. Contrast this with rpm that automatically goes to the right place and is configured correctly. And just works (tm). So, that's why I'm hoping somebody that can (I really thank you guys!) will have the time to make a rpm for SUSE out of things like java. That way stupid users like me can enjoy SUSE. -- HG. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

OK. Well, it sounds like you were expecting something a little better integrated than a generic Sun release can be. Because the SuSE engineers have done a good job at integrating the Java release in the past, your expectations went beyond what the generic installer from Sun can accomplish. I don't have a problem managing multiple installations, even when not all of them are integrated via the /etc/alternatives mechanism, e.g., so as I said, I don't expect any problems.

Finally somebody understands what I tried to say exactly. Thanks. I think many people here took what I wrote as critisism agains SUSE while it really is the opposite, just like you said. When the SUSE guys do it, it just works. And that is why I hoped that the SUSE guys would do it. And asked for it. I know my writing is not that good (english is not my mother tongue). Thanks for understanding. -- HG. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

my wife asked me this mornig: "you must show me this wonderfull clip on the net. I went there (http://www.tvmag.com/accueil.jspx, the clip of the black singer on the right)". Seamonkey 1.5a (my own) asked for java. I donwloaded and installed java (link, not copy :-) as sun asked for, and nothing works. sun neither say what gcc copy to use or how to know, but the gcc29 crashes mozilla, so I beg it's not the good one :-) about:plugins list java 1.5.0-10, so does this works for you? thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net Votez pour nous, merci - vote for us, thanks :-) http://musique.sfrjeunestalents.fr/artiste/Magic-Alliance/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I assume you mean the homage to James Brown. I got a message box that wanted to know if I wanted to trust something done with Windows [ had to think about that for a bit ] then said there were no "wmpns" in the java path. I don't know what the "ns" part of it means but I bet the "wmp" is Windows Media Player. Probably one of Microsofts non standard implementations of java. A quick Google shows "SYMPTOMS If you use a version of Netscape Navigator that has an embedded <APPLET> tag for the Windows Media Player 9 Series OCX control, the Java Runtime may not initialize the control. CAUSE This problem occurs because the Windows Media Player 9 Series OCX control uses methods that are no longer supported by Netscape." You may not have been using a Mozilla browser but I bet it's along the same lines. -- (o:]>*HUGGLES*<[:o) Billie Walsh The three best words in the English Language: "I LOVE YOU" Pass them on! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Here's what I've found: - Under Firefox on Linux the applet loads but there's a class, something Windows (media) -specific, no doubt, that is unavailable and the player doesn't play. - Under Windows (under VMware on the same Linux box) the video works both in Firefox and in IE (7). It appears to be something Windows-specific wrapped in a Java applet.
