[SuSE Linux] Netscape offline and SuSE
Hi all, I recently migrated to S.u.S.E from Redhat. (5.1 upgrade sent me running) So far so good and besides, any distro that mentions Frank Zappa in the "Laurels" section of the Intro in the manual is alright with me. 8^[* However, one thing that's making me a little crazy is the fact that I can't keep Netscape running now unless I'm on line. I never had this problem with RedHat. I've tried the stock RPM that came with SuSE and the 4.05, 4.06 and 4.5 tarballs and if I'm not on line the program either freezes on startup or will freeze after just a few minutes of use. I have it configured to load a local file (the HOWTO index) on startup so it's not like it needs to do a DNS lookup or anything. If I'm online it works great. I only post this here since I never had the problem until switching to S.u.S.E. Can anyone please give me a clue? I'm sure it's something immensely simple that I'm just too dense to see. many thanks in advance, Brendan - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Well, if you solve this one, puhleeze post the answer. I struggled with this problem for a long time without success (of course, those were newbie struggles). I had config set to "Don't load a Web page at startup; mail server & newsserver=localhost" and the sucker still froze as soon as I opened a "Reply" or "New mail" window. I'm using Lynx, Mutt and slrn now and I'm satisfied. If I _need_ to see a Web page in all its slow graphic glory, I'll start X and Netscape. what about "news" ? this was not a hanger to me, but it triggered my dial on demand line for no reason. thre are .newsrc* files in user's home dir, that can be deleted. for Chris suggestion (other thread) to reinstall, I add: remove the .netscape directory in your home dir, and let netscape create it new. This finally did the trick the two times i fought against netscape. you have to edit the preferences again and late copy your addressbook. Or, before that, alternativly create an alter ego (other *new* user) and call netscape from there. If it works to your satisfaction, kill the .netscape directory in your home direktory. I'm seeing this very same problem since installing Netscape 4.5. I have a home office up stairs and have and a network server downstairs. I can hear the modem on the server dialout when I start netscape. Once the server gets logged into my ISP and I have a connection, netscape unlocks. I'm running KDE 1.0 and when Netscape "Freezes" it hangs the whole UI which is very bad. I guess Netcape is doing some sort of DNS lookup and the lookup is blocking the entire Netscape UI as well at the window managers. Juergen Braukmann wrote:

yes. I installed a caching nameserver. starting netscape mail, it wanted for some curious reason the name of an news server I never knowingly accessed. weird. Killed the .netscape dir and recreated it - peace. did not see that with netscape 3.x netscape 3.x at some point (mail) decited to draw **all** available memory, including cache. killed .netscape - peace. if something goes wrong with netscape, .netscape has to go. ;-)) (i usually rename it, to be save ...) BINGO! Oh, thank you, thank you. That did it. Well, in my particular case at least, reinstalling and reconfiguring didn't help. Likewise starting fresh with a newly added userid. Always the same lockup and scrolling error message on the (locked) xterm that I started netscape from: "Warning: Select failed; error code 9". If I have my PPP up and running I can start Netscape without fear, otherwise, well, that's why I use lynx/Mutt/slrn now :-) Howard Arons -- Powered by SuSE Linux 5.2 -- kernel 2.0.33 Communications by Mutt 0.93.2 - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Brendan; Im sure this is not what you expect but it may be of value. I had the same issue with 4.5 and the SuSE issuance. In both cases it was simply a matter of re-installing. Solved the problem for me...other opionions may be of further benefit to you. regards ch - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
