Hello SuSErs, I have a question. Is there a way to temporarily stop the boot up process so that you can read/study the messages? I've looked at dmesg, but not all of the messages are in there. like the error messages don't show up. Weird! or, where are the error messages written? Yes, it doesn't contain the error messages either. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

HI I just finished re-compiling the 2.2.17 kernel and have the same "char-msg-4 missing" error message. It doesn't sem to be hurting anything, and my SuSE 6.3 router/firewall box seems to be doing everything that it was doing before I compiled the kernel. I have not tried everything yet, including the added modules that I wanted to include. But I am hoping that someone here knows what this "char-msg-4 missing" error message is all about. I eagerly await the answer...) Doug Roberts dgr@sk.sympatico.ca -----------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not familiar with a char-msg-4. Are you sure it's not char-major-4? That would be the serial module. Check your /etc/modules.conf for the module that's causing the problem and # it out. Usually I've encountered similar messages when I've not compiled support for a certain module (i.e. IPX, IPv6, etc.), yet there's still an entry in modules.conf for it. As you said though, it's not harming anything, just more of an annoyance. Cheers! Thanks to both Ken and Nick for their replies. I investigated and saw that
you were both correct on the char-major-4 issue.

I believe dmesg simply gives the contents of /var/log/boot.msg, which records only those actions taken by the kernel itself during bootup. The question no one seems to have a good answer for is how to see the messages resulting from the scripts in /sbin/init.d, e.g., the ones that mount the filesystems. Shift-PgUp shows some of them, but not always all of them.
