I have tried restarting console kit, but it fails:

I know only enough to know I don't like console kit, so what is not connecting to what? I've checked that the socket was there:

console kit was running before I tried the restart, but now -- it's tanked. What says the brain trust about what to check?

I think the system dbus daemon has crashed / was terminated. To get it all running as before a reboot would be helpful.
