DVD Permissions -How to Fix and make it stick?
SuSE 8.2 running on my desktop PC. I'll shoot some details on the hardware if needed but I don't think that will matter for this question.... My DVD Player/Burner is functional "sometimes". When I first install SuSE, the DVD player works fine to play audio CD's using KsCD. But it seems like anytime I install, change preferences, or configuration for any audio or video apps the stupid thing won't play audio CD's anymore. It will still play .mpg files, .mp3 files, and all manner of video just fine in GXine and XMMS. When I try to play an audio CD this is the error I see thrown by KsCD: CD-ROM read or access error (or no audio disc in drive). Please make sure you have access permissions to: /dev/dvdrecorder When I look at /dev/dvdrecorder I see the settings are rw-r----- and it is owned by root and in the group called disk. Now this seems to me to be the weird part. When I log on as root I cannot change any of these permissions. The check boxes are all "greyed out". I CAN edit the owner and group names, but they don't stay put after I click OK. In fact, when I choose the dvdrecorder file and choose "permissions", I see owner as root and group as disk as mentioned above. BUT then when I look at the directory of /dev and see the Owner and Group columns in the window it shows root and root instead of root and disk. Doesn't that seem ridiculous? And I'm not so sure I really want to reassign the owner or the group settings anyway. If I set ownership to my primary user name, then no one else will be able to read/write to/from it would they? In any case, I cannot seem to be able to modify these. I KNOW you folks will have an idea how I can get the DVD to play the audio CDs reliably. Maybe there is a better tool to play audio CD's than KsCD? Oh yes, and the preferences in KsCD are set to read from /dev/dvdrecorder.
