Hello list. Anyone have an idea on how to backup the contents of a _partition_? I'm thinking maybe I could use dd but I'm not sure. For example, I would like to backup everything that resides on /dev/hda2. Ideas/suggestions much appreciated, as always. Well, the way I backup my system is with the tar command. It works well for me. All you have to do is mount the partition you wish to backup to some location, like /mnt or something. Change directory into the mount point (etc: cd /mnt), and simply tar everything up: tar zcvf <filename> * Please look at the man page for details on the four switchs I used on tar. -- Sam Carleton ------------ http://www.bigfoot.com/~scarleton (Homepage) http://www.uptimes.net/hostinfo.html?hid=1218 (Linux Box) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I'm proficient in tar usage, although tar is a poor choice in this case. The particular partition I need to backup is the root parition (/); in theory I could boot a rescue system, mount the root in /mnt as you said, and tar away (of course sticking the tar ball on another partition). However the box is heavily used and I would like to minimize downtime. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Hello.. I used to do just this with a zip drive.. I created a 'root' filesystem on a zip cartridge, mounted it as /mnt and then did a 'tar' copy like this: # cd / # tar cfl - . | ( cd /mnt; tar xfSpB - ) Done. You can then make a boot floppy that boots directly off the zip, too. I might have edited the zip's /etc/fstab to note the new '/' filesystem. Worked like a charm. I quit going through the effort, though, because I just haven't had problems to make the effort worth while. :-) Later -Nick -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

You could use dd but that is an unusual choice. The usual ones are tar, cpio and dump. Cpio and tar have the advantage of working with any file system but I believe that they still have problems with long file names. Dump is probably most effective, after all that is what it was designed to do but it is restricted to a single file system type e.g. dumpe2fs. If you want the result to be a file system rather than a file then perhaps the rsync might be of interest. /Michael -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
I've been playiung around with dump and it seems to have worked.
I needed to backup the contents of a device, ie, /dev/hda2, rather than an
actual directory.
Only qualm I have about dump is it likes to talk to tapes; I needed to dump
to a single file -- which it can do -- but if the args to -B and -b aren't
good it'll need more than one file.
Tar would not have worked because, again, I needed to backup the contents of
a device (in this case, a parition) and I don't think tar can do that. If
it can tar devices please enlighten me; I've read through the tar info but
haven't come across anything useful for anything other than plain
files/dirs.
