I added a second hard drive, created a partition on it, created an ext3 file system on it and mounted using : mount -t ext3 /dev/hdb1 /opt2 I have this entry in my etc/fstab: /dev/hdb1 /opt2 ext3 users 1 1 It mounted the drive OK but when I try to save files to /mnt/hdb1 or /opt2 I get error messages about the partition not being readable. What am I doing wrong ? Thanks, Nathan ___________________________________________________________ To help you stay safe and secure online, we've developed the all new Yahoo! Hi,
I'm using opensuse 10.0 and created the partition using fdisk. I then created a filesystem using
mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hdb1
Thanks,
Digsy

Hi Nathan,
What tools did you use to create the partition and format it? What version of SUSE are you running?

It's been a long day and I must be getting tired, Digsy. On the face of it, I don't see that you've done anything wrong. Obviously /opt2 must exist if it mounted. Maybe you could share (copy/paste) the error messages you're getting? Carl <yawn> ;-)
When I opened Konqueror and try to copy a file to hdb1 it says:
Access denied
Could not write to /opt2/test.txt
Thanks for your help,
Digsy

Change the fstab entry from this: /dev/hdb1 /opt2 ext3 users 1 1 to this: /dev/hdb1 /opt2 ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 then "umount /opt2" and "mount /dev/hdb1" (mount will use the attributes you've set in fstab) Carl
Thanks - that worked a treat.
Just one last question - how do I get into the drive from a command prompt ?
I can see it in the media section in Konqueror but couldnt figure out how to get into from the CLI
Thanks,
Nathan

Just one last question - how do I get into the drive from a command prompt Since it's mounted at the directory /opt2, you 'cd' (change directory) to '/opt2' like this: cd /opt2

Do you have the permissions set for the new drive? Did you check to see if root can access it, but user cannot? Usually when setting up a new drive like you did, only root will be able to access it until you change that. regards, Lee -- -- KMail v1.9.1 -- KDE v3.5 -- SuSE Linux v10.0 -- Registered Linux User #225206 "Life is like a cigarette, smoke it to the butt!"
