Hello Suse Users; My 7.2 arrived Thursday, June 21 as I was getting ready to go to a Family Reunion. The only family I could think of while at the reunion was the Suse Family :-). Got home last night, put the CD in and said "update it". Presto, chango after 405 packages(about 1/2 hour+ or - a few minutes I had a 7.2 system running like greased lightning. GREAT JOB SUSE. Hi, Right I go a new 'up to date' machine, SuSE 7.1 installed like a dream, all hardware was recognised first time including the USB card. So I decided to have another attempt to move my Alcatel USB ASDL Modem from my Windows workstation to this new machine. I have been trying to follow the how to at... http://www.linuxdude.co.uk/docs/Alcatel-Speedtouch-USB-mini-HOWTO/speedtouch usb.html ..and I am stumbling at the first step... It says... "Patching the kernel.. Test the pppoatm-1 patch: patch -p1 -s -E --dry-run < /path/to/pppoatm-1 If this command produces any output then something is wrong with your 2.4.2 kernel source tree. Please fix it before continuing." Well I get screens and screens of error messages, so I suppose I must fix my broken kernel source tree (is the default 2.4 kernel from SuSE in 7.1) How do I find out what's wrong? has anyone has got their Alcatel USB ASDL Modem under SuSE? Cheers Phil

[snip] I imagine the patch is intended to be run against a "vanilla" kernel source tree; SuSE include extensive patches of their own in their kernels, so the patch is quite likely to fail. Also, I think the kernel that comes with SuSE 7.1 is actually 2.4.0-based not 2.4.2. You need to build a vanilla kernel for your system. It's not as scary as you may think, and SuSE runs quite happily with a kernel built from vanilla sources. Hmm. It would be annoying if the Alcatel patches only run against one version of the kernel - hopefully they'll go into the core code before too long. -- Rachel
I would take a look at the benoit open-source drivers too http://benoit.papillault.free.fr/speedtouch/index.en.html dids

Excellent, no kernel patching <g> I shall see how it goes! Cheers Phil

The problem seams to be is there licence is rather 'closed source' so it is a bit inflexible on who and how they can be distributed. It took nearly a year for them to release a Linux driver, so I don't want to push my luck (I just want to get it working <G>). Cheers Phil

If you do a standard SuSE installation with 7.1 the kernel is most likely 2.2.18 instead of 2.4 Easiest way to fix this is to run YAST and to then install kernel 2.4 So now you have 2.4 but the packages at linuxdude require at least 2.4.2 At linuxorg you can download up to kernel 2.4.5 so take you're pick. B.T.W. I've got the same problem with my Alcatel USB SpeedTouch. And I haven't been able to get it working yet either. I requested support from SuSE but they told me, as the driver is a "closed"source driver, it's not supported. Greetz Pete

Sorry Phil, I'' ve been trying for the last 2 months myself. Still don't have it working. I have recompiled kernels to include ATM and some other stuff. I've even gotten it to the point that when I compile using "make xconfig" the driver shows up in the configuration menu. So I KNOW I've gotten the right modules loaded. And still no luck. Frankly I'm thinking of trying FreeBSD, because I heard somewhere (don't remember where unfortunately) that a guy in England got his Alcatel SpeedTouch USB working with British Telecom. I have got so far as the ppp scripts with Kernel 2.4 and SuSE 7.2, but it's not working, even though I am sure I have the correct kernel parameters. (Is there an easy way to view these?) Cheers Phil
