It sounds like a DNS type problem. Try adding the Windows IPs mapping to the servers /etc/samba/lmhosts. It works for me. I am running DHCP doing dynamic updates to DNS, but it appears samba won't find the machines unless they are in lmhosts. Worth a shot.
Another idea would be setting nmbd as WINS. Just add the directive "domain master = yes" somewhere in the common area of your smb.conf. (http://at.samba.org/samba/docs/man/smb.conf.5.html#DOMAINMASTER) You have to configure your windows clients to use the server as WINS and make sure your server knows all the names and ip-addresses. Either set up DHCP and DNS for your network or enter all the ip-addresses and names in /etc/hosts. regards, Stefan
