Tried XGL - How to turn it off now?
Dear list! After disabeling XGL in GNOME (with the XGL-Button in Control-Center) my Windows don't have titels nor borders, Alt+Tab isn't working, also everything which was animated within XGL before. How to get it back (at least until I bought the hardware needed - Athlon 900MHz 256 Megs Ram and Geforce2 isn't sufficent I can say)?? Thanks, Johannes

733Mhz, 256mb and Geforce2 is sufficient here...but with KDE......It is running very smooth but I removed the packages cause the shutdown dialog of KDE disappears (and some other dialogs also do not show up sometimes). There is allready a newer version of compiz but that one is tuned that the windows are very wobly and don't have time to change the settings. But youre hardware should be sufficient.... Azerion

Have you restarted your session (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) after switching Xgl off? Of corse your system is not capable enough to really enjoy Xgl. That is ancient hardware. Not true. With his hardware it will run smoothly. I have worse hardware (even older) and was surprised it runs completely smooth. Azerion

I assume that this depends on what you're expecting, and what you're calling smooth. I'm happy to hear that you have a great experience with it :-) Matthias -- Matthias Hopf <mhopf@suse.de> __ __ __ Maxfeldstr. 5 / 90409 Nuernberg (_ | | (_ |__ mat@mshopf.de Phone +49-911-74053-715 __) |_| __) |__ labs www.mshopf.de

Smooth as in the video's? Without shocking? That's smooth. For some reason my GL-screensavers seem to shock a little (have removed Xgl and Compiz, so that is not the thing). Somebody knows what to do about that. It's like: 5 seconds smooth 0.5 sec stop 5 seconds smooth 0.5 second stop etc Azerion

On GeForce2 OpenGL applications might run in software emulation mode on top of Xgl. If not, then at least marchalling the OpenGL commands takes time. Still, the half second stops sound strange. As GeForce2 is not a supported card, this will probably only be fixed by accident, by the community, or not at all. It is with 3d ON (there is a fix for the old drivers) and OFF (means: with nvidia-driver and with nv.driver). So it is not the card.....and again Xgl is off. Azerion

Sorry, misread that.

Sorry, no idea. I doubt NVidia will do anything about these old cards as well. And I cannot even reproduce, as all GeForce 1, 2, and 3 I had in the company and at university broke at some time (the fans stopped). Hehehem I have to spin the fan also when the PC boots up (at this moment is is going auto again ;-) ). But nVidia is coming up with new drivers for the legacy. I asked them to join bugzilla and the did ;-). Soon, very soon, there will be new drivers! ps to everybody. if you have a newer card 'to much' I put my hand in the air. Name a small price ;-) Azerion

Hi Azerion, Thanks for the heads-up on nVidia and legacy drivers. Just so you know, this kind of topic really belongs on SLE (suse-linux-e.) I'm hoping you'll post the information there because I'm certain you'll find many interested parties. Since I'm responding, I'll include this FYI: There are three or four PC fan manufacturers being represented by sellers on eBay. If you pull the 'tired' fan (if necessary,) write the make and model number down then search for those numbers on eBay, chances are very good you'll find an inexpensive but exact (OEM) replacement. It's a lot cheaper than retrofitting or replacing cards/cpus/mainboards, etc. To illustrate this point: the replacement for my recently failed cpu fan was all of $6.00-U.S., including shipping (domestic mail.) The closest retail solution around here (a mismatch/overkill, anyway) was about $20.00-U.S. plus tax and shipping/pickup. The original fan was more than adequate and lasted almost five years. It made no sense, given the age of the system, to dramatically 'upgrade' the cooling system. It silently 'purrs along' and is happy with the inexpensive OEM replacement. regards, Carl

My hardwrare isn't "ancient." Xgl is somewhat buggy and some current games won't play under it, like X2. Yes, I know it's a work in progress and I'll take another look at it in a future release. I'm more concerned about drivers for older and current hardware than I am eye candy and think that's where more effort should be placed! Fred -- Paid purchaser of ALL SuSE Linux releases since 6.x

GeForce2 is ancient. You cannot buy it any longer for several years now, I call this ancient. Yes, Xgl still has some bugs, especially with OpenGL redirection. It also behaves a bit different, and thus bugs in other systems (games) show up more easily.

Then don't use Xgl. Xorg will continue to work. It is also where the *main* development will continue to take place. Matthias -- Matthias Hopf <mhopf@suse.de> __ __ __ Maxfeldstr. 5 / 90409 Nuernberg (_ | | (_ |__ mat@mshopf.de Phone +49-911-74053-715 __) |_| __) |__ labs www.mshopf.de

There were no window-borders and -titles because gnome window manager was not started at login. I had to add gnome-wm in gnome-session-properties > start programs... I myself will buy new hardware since I like the "new" gnome being implemented in suse. And XGL is a nice feature... Johannes
