[opensuse] No wired or Wireless :(
I just switched from Fedora 8 to SUSE and am really impressed with how developed it is and would like to upgrade from vista on my work laptop. Everything installs correctly except for my NIC which is a Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCE-E Fast Ethernet Controller. I was expecting the wireless not to work which is not a big issue but not having wired is. The steps I have taken so far to no avail are: -Manually add is through the Yast2 manager and associated it with SKY2 driver. -Downloaded and installing the driver that Marvell has on their site, but the driver installation fails. -I downloaded distro 11 alpha and it sees it and I get connectivity but I did not do any further tests. -The odd thing to me is that is sees the device in System config but not in Yast. Am definitely not the Linux expert I have more experience with Astrix which is similar but not quite so any help would be very much appreciated because I would absolute love to make SUSE my main OS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

System config just reads the PCI IDs from the devices, it doesn't mean that the system has support for it, just that the PCI ID list has been updated to include it
-Downloaded and installing the driver that Marvell has on their site, but the driver installation fails.
Can you post a URL to the driver? Someone here might be able to make it work
-I downloaded distro 11 alpha and it sees it and I get connectivity but I did not do any further tests.
So I guess support for it is very new in linux, but at least you know it will be in the new version in June Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I believe that there's support for that Nic. in kernel 2.6.23* and newer......IF I remember correctly. Fred -- "Security" in Windows comes from patching a sieve. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I just tried this on my 10.3, and it worked. Since I don't have the hardware I can't actually test the generated driver, but the installation went through without any error messages What I did was this 1. Make sure kernel-source is installed, it needs to be the same version as your running kernel 2. cd /usr/src/linux 3. make mrproper 4. make cloneconfig 5. make prepare 6. make scripts After this, the install.sh script in the driver tar.bz2 will run to completion. Select to "remove the alternative driver", then your system should be ready to go Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Here is the URL for the driver http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverSearchResults.do. When I cd to /usr/src/linux and to try to make mrproper it fails saying I gave it no rule followed by a stop. I also assume you mean /usr/src/linux-x.x.x.x where the X's I assume are the kernel. I apologize for not having the exact text as am dual booting at work. -----Original Message----- From: Anders Johansson [mailto:ajh@rydsbo.net] Sent: Friday, April 04, 2008 5:10 PM To: opensuse@opensuse.org Subject: Re: [opensuse] No wired or Wireless :( On Saturday 05 April 2008 00:51:25 Brandon Bowlby wrote:

No I did not mean that. If you install the package kernel-source, you will get the directory /usr/src/linux Just make sure the kernel source package is the same version as the kernel you are running, then follow the instructions I gave, and things will work Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Ok this is probably a stupid question but where can I download the i386 2.6.22.5 kernel source, so I can put in on my flash drive? They are on your install DVD. Also, In Yast->software->community repositories you can add additional repositories (main, oss, non-oss, updates, etc..). Then from yast->software->software management, you can install all of them. Easiest, from the command line as root. "zypper in kernel-source" Also, if you still aren't having any luck and would like to try the 2.6.23.x kernel, add the following as a repository. http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-jengelh/SUSE-10.3/ (The full list of repositories are shown at: http://en.opensuse.org/Package_Repositories and http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories -- David C.
