For epson inkjets, gimp-print is probably the best driver available on any operating system. In 7.3 (probably also 7.2) install the following packages: cups cups-client cups-drivers (I think that's where gimp-print is) cups-libs kups (nice configuration package) qtcups (optional, nice frontend for printing) and ideally don't install lprold (unless you have another printer that prints better that way). Note that cups-drivers is in the Utilities/Printing set. Use YaST2 to configure the printer initially. Then use kups (under kde menu: System > Tools > Cups Administration tool) to fine-tune cups. You should need to change at most media size (typically Letter or A4) and resolution (360 is fast but lower quality, 720 slow but higher quality; it's unlikely you'd want anything else for standard printing). The version of gimp-print that comes with SuSE 7.3 is 4.1.10. This is technically a development release though you are unlikely to encounter any problems. The latest stable release is gimp-print 4.2, which you can get from http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net. Note that it is in tar.gz form; so you'll have to compile it yourself. Most applications will now work as you want them. For fine tuning, set the print program for StarOffice, Netscape, etc., to qtcups. qtcups will give you a print dialog that lets you specify resolution etc., for individual print jobs. You can also use qtcups filename to print standard files. That's about it. If you use LaTeX you might want to do some additional fine tuning for dvips. JDL

Hi, How do I make Kups see such a driver, like gimp-print (or in my case, I would require hpijs-1.0 for the HP officejet v30?) Cheers and TiA ... I would put the driver *.ppd or *.ppd.gz in /usr/share/cups/models or one of its subdirectories and do # /etc/init.d/cups restart or possibly # /sbin/init.d/cups restart (if that didn't work) However I've never actually tried to do it this way. JDL wolfi wrote:

Is CUPS better for a Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 940c too?
It is better for a HP Deskjet 610C in my experience. CUPS seems to be better pretty always according to many earlier statements on this list. Proceed as described by John Lamb, the description is excellent. Kups and qtcups are on the SuSE server under k4de2 Wolfi ============================================= mailto:wolfi_z@yahoo.com _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? www.linuxprinting.org recommend the hpijs driver, which you can get from http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/ The driver is relatively new and is produced by HP themselves. It looks as if this driver should be easy to install in recent versions of SuSE. ;-) There are licensing issues stopping hpijs from being incorporated into gimp-print. The FAQ says that this printer can be used under cups, but I don't think there's any advantage in terms of printing quality for doing so. cups with hpijs is probably a matter of taste rather than quality. Hi, and back there is my problem .... I compiled hpijs and it doesn't give me any *.ppd files which I could copy to /usr/share/cups/models in order to use them with cups ???!?? Right now I'll try the next thing, updating cups to 1.1.12 (SuSE 7.3 ships with 1.1.10) - maybe cups has a way to adress a v series office jet there .... You can create a PPD file online at: http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=hpijs using the instructions at http://www.linuxprinting.org/ppd-doc.html If your printer isn't listed, try a similar printer and, if necessary edit the PPD (text) file by hand. Copy to /usr/share/cups/models, restart cups, draw a circle of salt round yourself and hope for the best. JDL wolfi wrote:
