The latest nVidia driver that one is to install from nVidia after the kernel update just posted and installed by YOU, is NOT usable and WON'T install!! I hope SuSE is working on this, as 3D is "GONE" because of this error. Some have very slow systems now. Fred -- Planet Earth - a subsidiary of Microsoft®. Fred Yep, just been going through the wonderful world of nvidia hell. Ain't it grand!
At first I thought is was because of the new x-100 kernel, then I thought it was the new gcc 3.3 stuff. Back date both to original boxed version. I wish I knew this before. Especially since everytime you install a new kernel you have to install the driver again. Previously not a problem. And here I thought we were over this bump - apparently not. Hi List, Am I right in thinking that the 'kernel-source' rpm referred to in the HOWTO is the Nvidia kernel source? I must admit that I am getting thoroughly confused with the whole nvidia process. I think I'll buy a different card! Thanks. Michael.

No - its the Linux kernel source, this can be installed using YOU at the same time as the compiled kernel rpm. The nVidia driver needs to know about some header files in the Linux kernel source so it can talk to it. The package you want is 'kernel-source' -- Ray

The latest Nvidia drivers numbered 4496 seem to be causing problems to subscribers of this list. I was also unable to compile and install the drivers. Recently, however, the kernel on this machine was compiled and installed. After this, the Nvidia drivers compiled and installed without a problem. This is not an elegent solution but one way of installing the latest drivers. LW999

Actually on the suse site their is a link to a support page in the /supplimentary/X/XFree86/nvidia-installer-HOWTO that describes this. Essentially it goes like: cd /usr/src/linux make cloneconfig && make dep (then, 'cause I'm paranoid I do a mk_initrd) Then issue the command export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes then sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run And it should work. The link is at: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/XFree86/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html Also in a text file. The SuSE shipped (boxed) kernel was compiled with an earlier gcc, so if you update to gcc-3.3-43, /var/log/nvidia-installer.log will tell you your kernel was not compiled with the gcc you currently have. The only solution is to recompile the kernel, reboot with option "init 3", then the NVidia kernel will build and install. Regards Sid. Fred A. Miller wrote:

Even if you have a kernel that is compiled with the correct gcc this will fail. the nvidia HOWTO on the SuSE site has changed in the last couple of weeks (wow it was changed this morning... what a coincidence) or so to include the following text: ------------------------------------------- 2) Use the nvidia installer. export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=yes sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run ------------------------------------------- but what it doesn't tell you to do is that to run the nVidia installer you must not have X running and must be in either runlevel three or else have booted up into "safe mode" for a console session. All the steps upto "sh NVIDIA-Linux-xxxxx.run" can be done in "normal" mode, that one can't. You must then execute SaX2 whilst in console mode as well.

excuse the top posting but I was fighting with Pine in safe mode... arrrggghhh... I followed the nvidia instructions and the new SuSE howto to the letter, but when launching SaX2 to configure my graphics I get an "unsupported VGA mode" message floating on my LCD monitor and I get the same thing when attempting to start SuSE in normal graphical mode... How th F can i set my graphics up if I can't get SaX2 up in the first place??? OK... forced in the end to swap monitors over... arrgghhh. tried SaX2 --l and SaX2 --reinit no joy... Why the F does SaX2 _have_ to startup in a graphical server??? why can't it be started in an ncurses form like Yast2 can be and then just fire up the x server for the confirmatory test??? I'm lucky in that i had a spare monitor I could lift from another machine, what about people with no spares??? ps, my display device that was giving me grief was a Proview CY-565. I don't think SaX2 was able to get any info from it at all when queried and defaulted to a mode that wasn't supported... strange that because it was a least displayable before the kernel and nvidia hassle and I was able to use one of the Generic LCD monitors... it would be nice if SaX2 started up from safe mode and supported framebuffer by default as everything I've ever connected works in that display mode... I got it to work by setting IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH to 1, then running the installer. (env IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=1 sh <NVIDIA-intstall-script>) I am using the Athlon kernel build 100 installed by YOU (with the sources). The driver works fine, getting thousands of fps in gears etc. If you do this, do check using the above methods that you really *do* have the same gcc as the kernel was compiled with! <snip/> -- Ray
