I've set the "Always Use My Fonts" option in my Netscape 4.05 that came with SuSE 5.2, and selected 14 pt fonts for both fixed and proportional fonts. But, Netscape ignores my option and the selected fonts, and uses the fonts in a default size (and color) that is very hard to read at 800x600. How can I get Netscape to use larger font sizes (other than going to 640x480)? Also, what goes in the empty boxes on the Netscape config page under "Use Scalable Fonts"? You think they are hard to read at 800x600, try them at 1280x1024! I would love to hear the fix for this one. This has been on my low priority anoiance list for some time now. Anyone have an answer? -Ben - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

After lots of experimenting, I think I have a fix that's workable, at least for me. Disclaimer: this is a black magic fix; I have no idea of what's really going on :-) Under Navigator's "Help|Font Displayer" I learned that the only displayer I have installed is from BitStream. So, I changed "Edit|Preferences|Fonts" to select BitStream faces for both proportional and fixed fonts at 14-16 pts, checked the "Use Scalable Fonts" boxes and chose "Always use my fonts" as another option. Would you believe... it worked, albeit the lettering in headings is a little raggeddy-ass looking, but the page is now perfectly legible. Oh yeah, changes in the "Preferences" don't seem to be recognized unless Navigator is restarted (not the way my Win95 navigator behaves). And I still don't have a clue what should go in the edit boxes next to "Use Scalable Fonts". Sigh. Anyway, that's what I'm doing now, and things are much improved. Another option you have is to uninstall netscape, install all the fonts that come on the S.u.S.E. discs, reinstall netscape and you should have access to them all. I use 1024x768 and I like a helvetica.12 for my variable width font and clean(schumacher).14 for my fixed width. I noticed that when I installed true type fonts netscape didn't see them, but when I tried a new netscape it did, so I imagine the fonts must be installed prior to firing up the first instance of netscape for them to all be visible to netscape. I'm not 1000n this, perhaps just rm -rf'ing .netscape would do the trick. -- .###. /#######\## -==============================================- ;##### ;# Mike's WindowMaker ;##### ;# <A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html"><A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A">http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A</A>> \# /## -==============================================- ###'---'#### - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

What version do you run? I run 4.5b1 and it recognizes the changes in "Preferences" just fine.... If you change the "always use my fonts" radio button thing, you have to reaload the page though. I am pretty sure 4.04 behaved the same way. <A HREF="http://privat.schlund.de/bartmoss/"><A HREF="http://privat.schlund.de/bartmoss/</A">http://privat.schlund.de/bartmoss/</A</A>> ICQ UIN: 3322540 - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

It's 4.04 I believe; the version that's supplied with SuSE 5.2. And, you're correct in what you say. I was basing my comments or the "original" behavior of my Netscape install. However, I realized that while I was applying my "font fixes," I rm'd ~\Netscape. Now, after a fresh startup, everything seems to behave itself. I can set font preferences for other foundaries than BitStream :-), and see the results right away. As far as I can tell, the boxes next to the "Scalable Fonts" option are a one-off setting for non-standard point sizes; the settings are not retained after reboot. Thanks for your interest and comments.
