[SuSE Linux] Sound on 2.2.x kernels
Hi, I bought an OSS license from <A HREF="http://www.4front-tech.com/</A">http://www.4front-tech.com/</A> just before the 2.2 kernel was out. I'm on 2.0.36 (SuSE 6.0) right now. I think the new kernel has extensive support for sound. I'd like to hear from people who have experience with sound on 2.2.x kernels, and whether it was a dumb thing to do to spend 30 US$ on something that is now a built-in. Depends on you sound card. I'm using a SB 16 non-PNP which has always worked well under Linux both with kernel 2.0.36 and 2.2.3 (better under the 2.2.x series) Regards, Terry -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

A freind of mine just upgraded to the 2.2.4 kernel and he was previous running the 2.0.36 kernel (he was using oss for sound no problem) when he upgrade however, it seems the new kernel 2.2.4 (not sure about the 2.2.x kernels before 2.2.4) does not support OSS, he hasnt gotten it working under this kernel at least. and this is what he claims. Any ideas/comments/suggestions? - Nick On Tue, 30 Mar 1999, Jerry Lynn Kreps wrote:

Not right now, but I'm sure I will when I run into the same problem this May when SuSE 6.1 comes out and I putz around to get sound working again... -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Hi, I had the same problem. Just go to the oss website and get the upgrade for 2.2.x . <A HREF="http://www.opensound.com</A">http://www.opensound.com</A> or for info about the OSS free <A HREF="http://www.4front-tech.com/ossfree</A">http://www.4front-tech.com/ossfree</A> (I think this is no longer supported?) Hope this helps, Mike On Wed, 31 Mar 1999, Nick wrote:

The OSS drivers you buy are alot easier. I thought I knew sound setup for my awe32, but I have spent about 10 hours fiddling around with /etc/conf.modules to get it to where it works perfectly. It's easy to use the standard drivers, but you need to put lines in /etc/.conf.modules for your specific card. There is good documentation in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound, but it is difficult to understand at first. Luckily, most cards have been setup by now, and you can find the right conf.modules statements in the newsgroups or here, just by asking. But with OSS, there is no isapnp to deal with, nor conf.modules. I did learn about module options though, so there is something to say for doing it the hard way.
